What a joy to begin the with a time of reflective prayer and worship gathering attended by friends from other local church communities, as well as visitors and passers-by. We are very grateful to photographic artist John Boaz for telling us about his wonderful creative project “Rivers of Living Water” which traces Christianity in Britain in all its rich and varied expression, and also to Chris Greenhalgh for sharing movingly about the persecuted church and Open Doors’ ministry of presence. We are also so grateful to talented local worship leader Bob Bell for helping us to draw close to God during a very sacred gathering time.
St Mary’s Whitekirk will be open for quiet prayer from Monday 7th - Thursday 10th September from 10am to midday and 7-9pm each day. You are very welcome to drop in!

Peace is a small word for a big idea. Perhaps shalom expresses it better - a desire for wholeness and restoration
Perhaps this lovely poem by Martin Wroe might speak to this longing for restoration of relationship, and although this poem feels personal, there’s something universal about the longing for shalom in it too:

What are we going to do?

What are we going to do with our differences?
Now that we harbour these grudges
Will we brush them aside or talk about it?
Our competing versions of justice

That thing you said, the way I behaved
The genie that jumped from the bottle
I let you down, you gave me up
Can this knot ever be untangled?

It is what it is, is what everyone says
But what if it’s not what it seems?

Come join us during the Global Week of 24-7 Prayer! We are delighted to be hosting an opening gathering this Sunday 6th September at St Mary’s Whitekirk from 3-5pm, which is open to all. Drop in any time after 3pm to explore the prayer stations or simply sit in the sacred peace of the beautiful building. From 4-5pm we will have a time of guided reflective prayer and worship.
Then from Monday 7th - Thursday 10th September St Mary’s Whitekirk will be open for a morning and evening prayer watch each day at 10am -12 noon, and 7pm - 9pm. All are welcome to drop in at any time during the watches to explore the prayer stations or to simply sit in the peace of the church. Each prayer watch will have a short opening prayer at the start of the session, and a reading of Lectio Live at the end.
Everyone is welcome, always.

This Sunday, 30 August Discovery will gather at Ondrej and Crystal's home on the Dunbar High Street for 10.30am.
We will have a short reflection relevant to the morning's activities then we will do some activities all together to help prepare for the 24-7 Prayer Global Week of Prayer we are hosting in St Mary's Whitekirk.

Bring a breakfast themed nibble to share (fruit, pastry etc). Hot drinks provided.

Everyone is warmly welcome and if you aren't sure where to go, give us a shout.

Our Sunday gathering was a walk to meet in a cathedral of trees and read a beautiful Eucharist liturgy together, which had been created by the priest of a North American forest church.

We ended with this lovely prayer:
“Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Life-giver, Pain-bearer, source of all that is and ever shall be, you have showered us with abundance.
With the food we need for today, feed us.
For the hurt we cause, forgive us.
As we lose our way, restore us.
Enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living creatures, all part of the family of God.
Tune our hearts to live in harmony with Christ, with the Earth, with all creatures, and with our human neighbours too.
Now and forever,
Amen”
