This morning the Government released the latest immigration statistics for the year ending June 2026. Here’s five things you probably won’t read about in the media.

The two largest nationalities that crossed the Channel on a small boat in the last year were Eritreans and Sudanese nationals - and the Government granted protection to 84% (Eritreans) and 92% (Sudanese) of asylum claimants from those countries who received an initial decision in the last year. So much for; “they’re not real refugees”, eh?

The number of claims awaiting an initial decision is at its lowest level since 2019 - but the number of cases awaiting an appeal decision has increased fourteen-fold in the last four years. The backlog hasn’t disappeared, it’s just shifted.

The Government’s own data shows that historically the grant rate increases by 20% after appeals. That means tens of thousands of people's lives are being held in limbo due to the appeals backlog, when all they want to do is start rebuilding their lives.

People arriving via resettlement schemes is down 48%, and the number of family reunions are down 38% after the Government paused them last September. Just 448 people were able to come to the UK via the Resettlement and Mandate scheme showing why we need safe routes.

Almost 1 in 3 (29%) of all asylum claims were made by women, and 18% were children. Another myth dispelled by the facts.

The bottom line is these are not our figures. They are the Government’s figures. The next time the media or politicians spread misinformation about the numbers, call them out.

Five years since Kabul fell to the Taliban, Najiba is happy to now call Yorkshire her second home and it's the place where she feels safe. But surviving and finding safety in Britain is not without its sacrifices.
