Dumfries & Galloway Befriending Project

Dumfries & Galloway Befriending Project We support and enrich the lives of young people aged 8 to 18, across Dumfries and Galloway, through Befriending.

If you wish to make a donation to the Project, please visit our website: www.befriending.org We aim to divert young people away from statutory measures of care, relieve their suffering and promote their well-being. The Befriending Project is an early intervention service which recruits, trains and supports volunteer adult Befrienders who are matched one-to-one with a young person, aged 8 to 18 yea

rs old. Young people referred to the Project may be young carers; going through a rough patch; geographically or socially isolated; affected by bullying or other problems at school; or affected by the lifestyle of other family members.

At DGBP, we are proud to recognise and celebrate the work of our wonderful volunteers all year round—not just during Volunteers' Week.

Our Project could not operate without our 50+ dedicated Befrienders, whose kindness, compassion, and commitment make a real difference in the lives of young people every day.

As demand for our service continues to grow, we are looking for more caring individuals who would like to have a positive impact on the life of a young person.

If you've seen something on our page this week—or at any time—that has inspired you, we'd love to hear from you. Get in touch to find out more about the opportunities available.

Whether you're interested in becoming a Volunteer Befriender or joining our board of trustees, we would love to hear from you.

Thank you Susan! 🥳
Susan Stewart has been a valued member of Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project for 15 years and has taken on many roles in this time, including Befriending Coordinator, Volunteer Befriender and Befriender Representative on our board of trustees. Last night, at our AGM, Susan stepped down from her role as Befriender Rep and, having recently finished a very positive match with a young person, has also decided to step away from her role as Volunteer Befriender.

Susan has enriched the lives of many young people and families and supported many befrienders over her 15 years with the Project. We are delighted that she has decided to remain as a trustee on our management committee and will continue to be an invaluable member of our befriending team.

As a token of appreciation, volunteer befrienders were invited to join staff for meals in Dumfries and Newton Stewart to say 'thank you' for their fantastic work and dedication to the Project.

It was a great opportunity for new befrienders to meet some long-standing befrienders and share stories of the rewards of befriending.

If you are interested in becoming a befriender or joining our Board of Trustees, please get in touch via Facebook or email [email protected]

Volunteer Befrienders support our young people through so much during a match.
Here are a few quotes from befrienders and referrers which show how a befriender has a positive impact on a young person during their time together.

Today is the start of celebrating 'volunteers week' and all at DGBP would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our valued volunteers for the time and effort that they provide to our charity as a befriender or board member.

Befrienders are matched with a young person, and spend a few hours most weeks meeting them on a 1-1 basis, during which time they look to develop the skills of the young person and provide them with the confidence to manage personal challenges.

Befriending is a rewarding role and befrienders regularly comment that it's them that benefit from being matched with a young person, as it makes them smile, gives them structure and allows them to build a positive befriending relationship.

It may be 'volunteers week' but we value every week that our volunteers give up their time to enrich the life of a young person.

If you are interested in becoming a befriender or board member contact us on 01387 247812 or at [email protected]

BEFRIENDER VACANCIES

Please share to reach more potential befrienders in our community. We require more befrienders in the Wigtownshire area due to our current waiting list. 🙏

Make a positive difference to a young person aged 8 - 18 in our community by playing an active role in supporting them as they continue their journey through education and beyond and volunteer as a befriender.

A befriender commits 1-2 hours per week with the young person; trying new activities, going for walks, teaching the young person new cooking skills and much more. A rewarding opportunity for all involved.

A training course (6 evenings) is scheduled to start in March 2026 and we would love you to join us.

Due to our current waiting list we require male and female befrienders.

If you are worried about the personal commitment due to planned holidays or other factors, don't be, we can work around that.

Contact us at [email protected] or telephone 01387 247812 to find out more about becoming a befriender.
