Today is Trisomy 18 (Edwards' Syndrome) awareness day. Trisomy 18 is a chromosomal abnormality that happens at conception where a baby will have 3 copies of chromosome 18 instead of the normal 2. There are 3 types of Trisomy 18..
full trisomy 18 β the most common and most serious type
mosaic trisomy 18 β a less common type, which may have less serious symptoms
partial trisomy 18 β a very rare type, which may have less serious symptoms
Babies diagnosed with trisomy 18 are branded not compatible with life.
Today we remember our special wee T18 warrior, who beat so many expectations and made it to 27 weeks gestation, when it had been suggested she would not make it past 15 (we didn't know this until she was born as we didn't receive Violet's formal T18 diagnosis until 21 weeks gestation). We also remember all the other beautiful, very much wanted babies who were delt this cruel hand. If you do anything today, do a little bit of looking into Trisomy 18 and help raise awareness, for all of them. It really could happen to anyone. We have been Violet's voice for almost 7 whole years, and will continue to be her voice for as long as we are able. ππ©΅ ###
