From the very beginning he walked with me through the process with patience, understanding and genuine care. With the emotional challenges I was carrying at the time, the journey could easily have been overwhelming, but he handled everything with kindness and professionalism”.

As a supported housing provider, it gives us great pride as an organisation, and job satisfaction for our staff when residents are able to move onto independent accommodation following on from the support we have provided to them while in our supported accommodation.

Get Online Week 19-25th October

Get Online Week is the largest annual digital inclusion campaign which is run by The Good Things Foundation. It’s aim is to close the digital divide by helping people gain the skills and confidence to navigate and access the modern digital world.

Some interesting statistics:
• Only 1 in 3 adults are comfortable being online.
• 34 million adults in the UK face some sort of barrier to being online, such as data poverty, a lack of basic digital skills or confidence being online.
At Derventio Housing Trust we promote online access in many ways.

Last year we ran a digital inclusion course at our Growing Lives project over several weeks to support participants to gain more confidence and improved digital skills.

Sylvester’s Fund helps residents to access items they are struggling to afford. During the last year 3% of Sylvester’s Fund was spent on mobile phones. This has helped to reduce digital exclusion by providing people with online access to a range of different digital services such as the NHS app, online banking and Universal Credit journal.

🏠 It’s the first ever !

From 19–23 October, we’re joining organisations across the country to celebrate the life-changing difference supported housing makes and highlight why it needs a secure future.

Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home, with the right support to live independently and with dignity.

Last year, Derventio Housing Trust provided supported housing for more than 1,000 people across the East Midlands, West Midlands and South West, helping people overcome challenges, build confidence and take steps towards a more independent future.

Supported housing changes lives. This week, we’re celebrating its impact and raising awareness of why it matters.

After a summer of record-breaking heatwaves, followed by the recent torrential rains, how do our deepest beliefs compel us to act? The intense summer heat and heavy downpours are a stark reminder that the climate crisis is here.

Join our friends at Derby Cathedral during the Helios installation to explore how our faiths give us the tools to respond to climate justice, featuring two distinct lenses:

The Christian Perspective by The Revd Prof Charlotte Sleigh: The Biblical teaching about caring for God’s creation and protecting our vulnerable neighbours.

The Muslim Perspective by Dr Ali Akbar: Honouring the sacred trust (Khalifa) to restore Earth’s balance.

The talk is followed by a post-talk drinks reception.

World Homeless Day is promoted annually on the 10th of October.

The main purpose behind World Homeless Day is to educate people on the issues people face when homeless and to express the major changes that are needed to end homelessness through policy changes, funding and ACTION.

An astonishing 2.8 billion people or 34% of the global population lack access to decent housing.

Here at Derventio Housing Trust we provide supported housing to people who would otherwise be homeless.

Just in the last year alone we have helped over 1,200 people by providing them with supported accommodation.

Alongside housing, all residents are given ongoing support including weekly home visits and regular communication through phone calls and messages.

The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day is lived experiences heard: real voices, real changes.

Here at Derventio Housing Trust 59% of the residents we supported in our housing last year faced challenges with their mental health.

Here is some feedback from a previous resident, “the 14 months of being housed with you has changed my life completely! My confidence, self worth and happiness have grown massively. Derventio is such an amazing company that has made me feel safe, secure and encouraged me create a more positive future for myself. Now I’m currently sitting in my dream home”!

Residents often share stories on the improvements they have experienced with their mental health following support through us and external services. For many, this has resulted in transformation and positive changes to their life such as moving into independent accommodation.

A great afternoon was had yesterday by Growing Lives participants and staff at Pickford House in Derby for the Lara Croft Exhibition to celebrate 30 years since the Tomb Raider game was released.

It gave the participants the chance to explore the exhibition, for some it allowed them to reminisce with each other about when they played the game in their childhood and relive that moment again by a PlayStation was available for participants to play the game again.

Derventio Housing Trust also has an interesting link to Lara Croft, where the building we previously had offices at on Ashbourne Road was the actual building the Tomb Raider game was developed and made, along with Derby has its own connection to Lara Croft where a traffic island has been named Lara Croft Island.

Thanks to Pickford House for hosting the exhibition, a great afternoon was had by all.

It’s October and time to be optimistic!

Action for Happiness have dedicated this month as Optimistic October, and off to a great start with today’s action being ‘’Find something you can be optimistic about’’.

At Derventio Housing Trust, as a supported housing provider, staff are continually encouraging residents to be optimistic about their future.

Optimism can be a gradual feeling, building over time as residents work with our Housing Support team to recognise the positive changes they have made in their lives, the small steps towards a brighter future.

For example, residents who have addiction issues may set a target of going several days without alcohol or drugs, a realistic goal building optimism for the future.

Or residents who suffer with social isolation can start attending our Growing Lives centre, helping them to meet new people in a safe space, and be optimistic about the friendships they can make.

Our Growing Lives project is a great opportunity for participants to build on various skills, practical ones such as gardening and woodwork, as well as improved social skills through meeting and interacting with other participants and staff, boosting self-confidence and mental health, all the right stepping stones to a more optimistic future.

Growing Lives gives opportunities for people to build their skills and confidence through activities including gardening, cooking, cycling, arts and crafts.

Reflecting on different aspects of our life can be a great way to help us move forward in our life!

Continuing our engagement with Self-Care September from Action For Happiness, today’s action being ‘’Choose to see your mistakes as steps to help you learn.”

During a resident’s time with us we provide specialist services, working alongside people who are taking control of their lives and making positive changes.

This can be a great opportunity for them to assess their life and strive to make positive changes for their future.

Will was also a previous participant on our Home4Me programme which provides people dealing with the challenges of homelessness with extra support to overcome the barriers they face which ultimately helps them work towards a brighter future.

Will’s story is a testament that shows with a combination of the right one to one and external support, individuals can make the right positive changes to move forward in their life.
