📣 Derby Sea Cadets Fundraiser – Camping Equipment Upgrade! ⛺⚓

We’re raising funds to upgrade our camping equipment so our cadets can continue enjoying safe, fun, and challenging outdoor adventures.

To help us reach our goal, we have a number of chairs available — perfect for offices, waiting rooms, community group, events, or as spares!

All proceeds go directly towards improving the gear our cadets use on training weekends and camps.

💙 How you can support us:
✔️ Make a donation in exchange for a chair
✔️ Share this post with friends and family

Every bit of support helps our young people get the most out of their Sea Cadet experience.

Thank you from all of us at Derby Sea Cadets! ⚓
If you’d like more details or to reserve a chair, just drop us a message! 😊

Time to relax…

With all adults and cadets back home, we’re delighted to report our unit had a fantastic time at X-Ray Company Royal Marines Cadets Easter Camp 2026 which was held over the bank holiday weekend.

7 cadets and 2 adults attended, with our cadets learning the foundational skills needed to operate in the field, and our adults helping to lead this vital training and other activities over the weekend.

And to top it all off, one of our detachment, MC Evalyn, was awarded best in troop for her outstanding attitude, willingness to learn, and for continuously displaying the commando values in some less than ideal weather conditions! - BZ, hoofing effort!

An all around fantastic event for AMBUSH.

Commanding Officer’s Christmas Message

As we approach the end of another busy and rewarding year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone connected with Derby Sea Cadets a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Christmas is a time to reflect, and when I look back over the past year, I do so with immense pride in what our unit has achieved together.

This year has marked a significant milestone in our history with the renaming of our unit from TS Kenya to TS Ambush. This change represents more than just a new name; it reflects our identity, our ambitions, and the positive direction in which Derby Sea Cadets continues to move. The way cadets, staff, parents, and supporters embraced this change speaks volumes about the strength of our unit.

We have also been highly visible within the local community, attending and supporting numerous community events throughout the year. These activities have been invaluable in reinforcing our links with Derby and the surrounding area, allowing us to showcase the values of the Sea Cadets while giving something back to the community that supports us so well. Our cadets have represented the unit impeccably on every occasion.

Another major highlight of the year was our Royal Naval Parade (RNP) inspection, which proved to be a great success, with us achieving another burgee award (top 20% of units nationally). The inspection reflected the hard work, commitment, and professionalism of both cadets and volunteers. It was a clear demonstration of the high standards we strive to maintain and a testament to the effort put in week after week.

Looking ahead to the future, there is much to be excited about. We will continue to build on this year’s successes, expand our opportunities for cadets, strengthen our community presence, and further develop TS Ambush into a unit we can all be proud of. With the dedication and enthusiasm shown this year, I am confident that the future of Derby Sea Cadets is bright.

Finally, I would like to thank our cadets for their commitment and enthusiasm, our volunteers and staff for their tireless dedication, and our parents, supporters, and community partners for their continued support. I wish you all a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Sub-Lieutenant (SCC) D Lunn RNR

More than 82,000 cadets turned out for Remembrance events across the UK.

As broadcaster Lorraine Kelly said, they are the "pride of our nation" and our "youngest guardians of remembrance".

It’s powerful to see so many young people stepping up to honour those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

And it’s now official!

This evening, surrounded by a host of VIP’s, cadets and their families, formally recognised the renaming of our unit to T.S. AMBUSH S.C.C..

We were proud to welcome the Officers & Ratings from our namesake vessel, HMS Ambush, who’s presence made the night truly special.

With speeches from our CO, representatives from HMS Ambush and our POC Johnson we now move forward under our new name and intend to do the name proud.

Our CO, S/Lt Lunn said:

“The renaming of our unit from T.S. KENYA S.C.C. to T.S. AMBUSH S.C.C. was not merely a procedural change; it was a profound moment of reflection and renewal. It honours our past while clearly setting a bold course for the future of our cadets. We are immensely proud of the history we carry forward and excited by the new chapter we've begun. Our cadets and their exceptional commitment to duty will continue to be the foundation of this history.”

We’d like to thank our VIP’s for their attendance on what is no doubt a busy weekend for all members of the Armed Forces Community. So to HMS Ambush, Lady Anne Soar, the Sponsor of HMS Ambush, and her husband Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, along with representatives of Derby RNA, RMA & Derbyshire Submariners and our previous Commanding Officers, thank you for celebrating this momentous occasion with us.

And a special shout out to CI Taylor for his fantastic photography!

It's all change here at Derby!

The Commanding Officer is proud to announce that following authorisation from Captain Sea Cadets, and endorsement from the Commanding Officer of HMS Ambush, we officially have transitioned ship name!

Effective from 22nd September, Derby Sea Cadets will now parade under the name T.S Ambush. Adopting this name serves to strengthen the link between the Sea Cadets in Derby and today's Royal Navy.

HMS Ambush, is affiliated to the City of Derby, and is a cutting-edge Astute-Class attack submarine. Based in HMNB Clyde in Scotland, the submarine is at the forefront of the Royal Navy's sub-surface fleet.

Here at Derby Sea Cadets, we're immensely proud to continue the tradition of recognising the vessels of the Royal Navy and the impact they have on the global stage through our affiliations. Our Ship's Company will continue to seek to embody the spirit and values held by the Officers and Ratings of Ambush.

The memories and legacy of our previous ships will remain as the core foundation of Derby Sea Cadets, now and into the future. Without their efforts, we wouldn't have the long and proud history we do.

Notice of Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025

Each Sea Cadets unit is an independent charitable organisation affiliated to the Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC). As such each unit is required under its constitution to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM).

As proud supporters of Derby Sea Cadets, we’d like to invite you to our upcoming AGM at 1pm 6 September 2025. Here’s what you need to know:

What is the AGM?
The AGM is a crucial yearly gathering where we come together as a community to review the past year’s achievements, discuss future plans, and make important decisions. It’s a chance for all stakeholders—parents, cadets, instructors, and volunteers—to have their voices heard.

Why Attend?
Stay Informed: At the AGM, you’ll receive updates on the unit’s activities, financial status, and overall performance. It’s an opportunity to learn about the impact we’ve made and the exciting initiatives ahead.

Have Your Say: Your input matters!
Whether you have ideas, concerns, or suggestions, the AGM is the perfect platform to share them. Your perspective helps shape the unit’s direction.

Meet Fellow Supporters: Connect with other parents, build friendships, and strengthen our community bonds. We’re all part of the Derby Sea Cadet family!

Trustee Roles on the Unit Management Team: Why They Matter
Our unit relies on dedicated trustees to guide its operations. These roles are essential:

Chairperson: Leads meetings, ensures effective governance, and represents the unit externally.

Treasurer: Manages finances, budgets, and financial reporting.

Secretary: Handles administrative tasks, maintains records, and communicates with stakeholders.

Other Trustees: Bring expertise in areas like health and safety, fundraising, or business development.

How Can You Help?
Consider volunteering as a trustee! Your skills and passion can make a real difference. If you’re interested, please reach out—we’d love to discuss it further.

Remember, Derby Sea Cadets thrives because of your involvement. Let’s continue working together to inspire and empower our cadets.

See you at the AGM!
