Burns wrote several pieces inspired by Jean Lorimer, whom he addressed as "Chloris". This poem is a gentle, comforting address to a young friend facing illness or life's hardships, urging her to find inner wealth in "the comforts of the mind," integrity, and true friendship rather than external youth and glamour.

Jean Lorimer — the woman behind Burns’s “Chloris”

Born near Moffat in 1775, Jean Lorimer became a friend of Robert Burns and his wife, Jean Armour. Her fair hair inspired the name many Burns lovers recognise: “Lassie wi’ the Lintwhite Locks.” Under the poetic name “Chloris”, she inspired around two dozen of his songs.

Her own life was far from a romantic ballad. Married young and soon abandoned by her husband, she later worked as a governess and housekeeper, enduring poverty and ill health before dying in Edinburgh in 1831.

Although their relationship has prompted speculation, Burns himself described his feelings in terms of friendship and imagined poetic passion. Jean helped fuel his songwriting during his final years, leaving a lasting mark on Scotland’s musical heritage.

Behind the beautiful songs was a real woman whose story deserves to be remembered. 💙

Here's the wonderful Karen Matheson singing Lassie Wi' the Lint White Socks.

Written in 1794, during Burns’s years living in Dumfries, this tender song was inspired by Jean Lorimer, the young woman he celebrated as “Chloris”. Her fair, flaxen hair gives the song its title.

Burns sent verses to music publisher George Thomson in September that year, setting them to the traditional tune “Rothiemurchie’s Rant”. Through a shepherd’s invitation to his lassie, he paints a beautiful picture of love through the changing seasons.

Not Burns but here's a wonderful performance of the 1982 melody Highland Cathedral written by Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb. The Dutch violinist and conductor Andre Rieu does a wonerful job in Maastricht with his orchestra. You even see the Dutch crowd get emotional.

Winter A Dirge — Robert Burns

In this moving poem, Burns finds comfort in winter’s wild weather. The howling wind, rushing burn and leafless trees reflect his own sorrow, while the final verse turns to faith and acceptance.

A thoughtful reminder that poetry can give voice to feelings we sometimes struggle to express.
