Abbeyfield Canvey Island Society is a Charity organisation dedicated to making the lives of older people easier and more fulfilling. We have a lovely House on Canvey which houses 11 people in their own rooms with en-suite facilities. There is a communal lounge where the Residents meet for coffee in the mornings and various other times of day for a chat or watch TV in the company of others. The Re
sidents are provided with a lovely cooked lunch and cooked or cold tea in the evening. Breakfast items are provided for the Residents to make their own breakfasts in their rooms according to the time they wish to get up. A General Manager, Kerry Bell, oversees the running of the house and there is one of three Cook/Support Workers on duty between 8.30 am and 6.30 pm for 7 days a week. We have two cleaners who clean the Residents' rooms once a week and also the communal areas. Laundry facilities are also provided in order that the Residents can do their own washing with assistance if required. Various activities are arranged for the Residents, i.e. Bingo, cupcake icing, Nail Technician, mobile library etc. all of which are included in the monthly rent. A Hairdresser comes into the House for anyone who would like their hair cut or blow dried. The House is situated close to various amenities, shops, churches, and the Residents are encouraged to leave the House during the day whenever they wish. The House likes to encourage independence and therefore those that wish help around the House by setting the dinner tables and watering the garden etc. The Abbeyfield Society is founded on the belief that Christian principles of care and compassion can and should find their outworking in practical concern for older people. Members of the Abbeyfield Movement, of all faiths and none, acknowledging the importance of this foundational principle, believe that;
1. All people, including older people, have intrinsic value and worth and should be supported in their desire to live in dignity and with respect.
2. Older people have an important and unique role to play in relation to families and the wider community.
3. For a variety of reasons, many older people suffer from loneliness and insecurity.
4. At a time of increasing longevity the medical, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of older people should be given high priority.
5. Within the wider community, individuals should be encouraged and helped to share their own gifts and skills with the older people. The Abbeyfield Society, as a co-operative movement consisting of volunteers and professional staff, endeavours to enhance the quality of life for older people. It does this predominantly through the provision of accommodation, providing support and care for older people in local communities and by other means. Company Overview
Abbeyfield currently has over 550 houses and 80 residential care homes across the UK, and are adding to these numbers by constantly developing new facilities
