British Values 🇬🇧

What are British Values and what do they mean to you?

We love this piece of artwork created by a pupil at Carlton Bolling, one of our Schools of Sanctuary, combining British Values with Refugee Week.

British Values were introduced into schools in 2014 by the Department for Education to try and underpin what it means to be a citizen in modern Britain.

Schools are required to promote and teach the five British Values: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

We think this artwork captures some of these values perfectly: people from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and experiences coming together under one flag. This is the Britain we want to see, yes? 👏

This Refugee Week, we're celebrating the schools that go above and beyond. This lovely article highlights the fantastic work of one of York's Schools of Sanctuary and the positive impact schools can have in helping everyone feel safe and valued and able to belong🧡👇

We welcome refugees! Thank you to Westminster CE Primary for this great piece of art - we know your school welcomes children seeking sanctuary wonderfully.

And a huge thank you to the many other schools across Bradford District who work tirelessly every day to welcome and support children, young people and their families who are seeking sanctuary.

Many of these schools are proud Schools of Sanctuary. A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to building a culture of welcome, understanding and inclusion for people seeking sanctuary. Through learning, action and sharing good practice, Schools of Sanctuary help ensure that everyone feels safe, valued and able to thrive.

This Refugee Week, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of staff and pupils who help make their school communities places of welcome for all - from welcome buddies to pastoral leads, to school councillors and NTE teachers, thank yoooou!🧡

🔔 Registration is now open for A Day of Welcome 2026!

On Friday 12 June, schools across the country will be coming together for a day of learning, solidarity and welcome.

We all know that schools have the power to shape the communities we want to live in. A Day of Welcome invites schools to create space for empathy, understanding and reflection - helping children and young people explore what it means to build communities rooted in kindness, compassion and belonging. It’s about nurturing the values that can shape a more inclusive future for everyone, including people seeking sanctuary.

Whether you’re already part of it or joining for the first time, we’d love to have you with us! 💛
