With the UK Government budget expected this week, the Animal Welfare Evidence Centre, which we co-founded, has revealed the staggering costs of animal harm in the UK 💔

Almost £1billion is spent by society dealing with illegal animal harm each year, with the bulk of that coming from the charitable sector and public donations - and many animal welfare charities now finding themselves at breaking point.

📸 Charlie came into our care with facial lesions, believed to be from untreated dental abscesses which burst through his face. Treating his facial wounds took over 6 weeks before our dedicated vets could then get to work tackling his dental disease. He has since been happily rehomed.

Last night the House of Commons debated a petition with 189k signatures calling for the law around animals involved in road traffic accidents in England to be changed.

Currently, only accidents involving species traditionally seen as 'working animals', such as dogs and farmed animals, legally have to be reported to the police. However, the Highways Agency is required to scan all domestic animals found on major roads (e.g. 'A' roads and motorways) in England to identify their microchips and notify owners.

This means that cats who are hit on minor roads can legally be left, with their owners never knowing what happened to their pet who just stopped coming home one day, unless they're voluntarily taken to a vet or are scanned for a chip 💔

The UK Government has no plans to change the law to include cats, but Defra has commissioned a research project about what challenges prevent some cats from being reunited with their owners after a road traffic accident, which we keenly await.

In any case, we would urge all cat owners to get their cats chipped (which is mandatory in England) so they can be reunited if they go missing. And if you're ever in an accident involving a cat and it is safe to stop, please do so. You could save their life by getting them to a vet, or at the very least, save an owner the pain of never knowing what happened to their beloved pet.

We have a small male Chihuahua in our care who is searching for a very special, quiet, adult-only foster home where he can learn that the world isn’t so scary. This dog is a sensitive soul who is quite nervous in new environments and takes time to build trust, so he needs an experienced foster home with plenty of patience and a calm, predictable routine. Experienced in positive reward based training and reading body language. He would do best in a peaceful household with no children or busy foot traffic, allowing him the space to decompress and settle in at his own pace, he could live with another suitably matched dog. If you have a quiet home, a gentle heart, and the time to help this little guy build his confidence step-by-step, please reach out to us today to apply to foster.

You must be committed to visiting the centre, completing in person and online training, and able to follow a behavioural and training plan in the home. You will receive support and guidance whilst fostering, and all food, equipment and veterinary care is provided.

Fostering is ideal if you want to help animals but can’t commit to permanent pet ownership right now. Through RSPCA fostering, you provide a temporary home while we continue working towards the animal’s long-term future.

Ellie's sad because after 87 likes and 51 shares of her latest video, there was not one application to rehome her 🥺
She's come such a long way and after settling into her foster home for a number of months, she's been comfortable at staying home alone for a short period of time recently. This is such a big win for her, but she has no new family to share it with!
