Oarsome Chance is a charity which uses indoor and on-water rowing as a tool for engendering life skills in young people from some of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities. Our programmes are based in and around coastal towns and set in communities which used to derive their income from coastal primary industries. As those industries have been gradually automated and replaced, the community’s int

ergenerational skillset is no longer in demand and those communities have become deprived.Oarsome Chance create programmes which use rowing as a tool for social cohesion and upwards social mobility by opening access to sport and all of the benefits that it provides, as well as helping to replace skill sets with a vocational trade element. Unlike LYR’s model, they offer a component where their beneficiaries can actually build their own skiffs (wooden boats). So the attributes that they glean from rowing are being directly attributed to a skill they learn concurrently. In the short term, this leads to employment outcomes for the young people on the programme; indirectly their families and the community benefit as a skill set is being introduced which would have otherwise been inaccessible.
