Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by the dreadful train crash yesterday. We are very saddened to know that one person has very sadly lost their life and our thoughts are with their family and friends at this most difficult time.
A major incident has been declared and our emergency services have worked around the clock. Our sincere thanks to all the staff in the A&E departments of our Hospitals and to all the emergency services for your remarkable immediate response and compassionate care.

Today we were delighted to buy and donate lots of cakes, to support the 4th annual Estates and Facilities Day at Bedford Hospital, celebrating the brilliant Estates and Facilities teams who help keep the hospital running every single day.

From engineers and electricians to cleaners, security staff, porters and admin teams, these are the people working hard behind the scenes to support patients, visitors and colleagues.

The weather may have been a little grey, but the event still brought plenty of smiles, appreciation and, most importantly, cakes!

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to celebrate the team, and to La Rondine for once again providing 300 delicious cakes and actually, themselves, donating 20% of them.

It was a lovely reminder of just how much these unsung heroes do for Bedford Hospital. πŸ’™

Mike Walsh will take on two cycling challenges to raise funds for Primrose Car Service. The Wicklow 200 on 7th June is Ireland’s premier cycling sportive, taking in many of the most iconic climbs in Ireland’s β€˜Garden County’ in an event that is among the most arduous and most revered annual cycling events on the world calendar. The event covers over 200 kilometres and 10,000 ft of climbing around the Wicklow mountains, a major international cycling destination.

The iconic London to Brighton on 21st June covers 54 miles, including the famous Ditchling Beacon climb.

Since January 2006, patients from the Primrose Oncology Unit going to Addenbrookes for Radiotherapy treatment have been able to travel in comfort and without charge due to a pioneering car service set up and run by the Bedford Hospitals Charity. Previously the patients were dependent on Patient Transport Service vehicles which collected a number of patients requiring different treatments at Addenbrookes from around the county before making their way to Cambridge. The whole trip often lasted all day. Thanks to the dedicated Primrose Car Service, which is believed to be unique in the NHS, patients are conveyed by comfortable Toyota Corolla and Rav4 cars from home to Addenbrookes and returned home as soon as the treatment – which only takes a few minutes – is completed. The six cars are purchased by the Charity and driven by unpaid volunteers, and the patient management is provided by the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust. Each year approximately 2000 patient journeys are made.

It was wonderful to join Liz, Chris and Christian from John Lewis Partnership who, on Tuesday, donated some beautiful quilts for new born babies on Cygnet Ward.

They made the donation to help celebrate International Day of the Midwife, which celebrates all the midwives who help welcome new borns into the world and give them and their mums any care they may need.

As well as the quilts, they also dropped off hampers of goodies for the midwives and maternity ward staff too.

We were delighted to organise this donation with them and are truly grateful to the John Lewis team for taking the time to recognise the wonderful work our maternity staff carry out everyday.

πŸƒ Two more of our brilliant London Marathon runners are getting ready for the big day tomorrow, and we are so proud to celebrate them.

James Stonebridge is taking on his first ever full marathon in support of Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends. He wanted to give something back after Bedford Hospital provided fantastic care to him and his family, and we are so grateful he has chosen to support us in this way.

Mike Watkinson is returning to marathon running for the first time since 2011. He is running not only because Bedford Hospital has supported him and his family at crucial times, but also to raise awareness of osteoporosis in men after his own long recovery journey. It is an inspiring reason to take on such a huge challenge.

James and Mike are doing something extraordinary. The London Marathon demands months of training, determination and sacrifice, and they are putting all of that effort into raising money for Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends.

Please help us give them the support they deserve by donating to their fundraising pages. Every pound raised helps us continue supporting patients, families and staff at Bedford Hospital.

We are so proud to introduce three more fantastic members of our London Marathon team, all taking on this incredible challenge for Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends.

Martin Hosegood is running his eighth marathon and his fourth London Marathon. Bedford Hospital has supported Martin and his family for more than 30 years, and he is proud to be giving something back to a hospital that has meant so much to them.

Richard and Helen Evans are turning their dream of running the London Marathon into reality together. Lifelong Bedfordshire residents, they recently got married and, instead of asking for wedding presents, chose to ask for donations to our charity so they could run in support of it. What a brilliant way to celebrate both their marriage and a cause close to home.

We could not be more grateful to Martin, Richard, and Helen for their commitment, energy and generosity. Taking on the London Marathon is no small thing, and they are doing it to help support patients, families and staff right here in our community.

Please join us in celebrating them by donating to their fundraising if you can.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈOur London Marathon team is incredible, and as they count down their final days of training, we thought we'd shine a light on a few of them. Today, we begin with three amazing runners taking on this huge challenge for Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends.

- Millie Colletta is running her biggest challenge yet in support of a hospital that has been part of her life from the very beginning, having been born at Bedford Hospital and lived in the area all her life.
- Sue Stone is taking on her fifth London Marathon and her ninth marathon overall. Having previously received treatment and surgery at Bedford Hospital after fracturing her hip, she knows first-hand just how important the hospital and its facilities are.
- Kate Pedley is running her first marathon in honour of her mum, who received incredible care through cancer services. She is taking on this challenge to give something back and raise awareness for others going through similar experiences.

We are so proud of Millie, Sue and Kate. The training, commitment and determination it takes to get to the London Marathon start line is huge, and we are incredibly grateful that they have chosen to do it for Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends.

Please help cheer them on and support their fundraising if you can. Every donation will help us continue making a difference for patients, families and staff.

Find out more about them and donate to their fundraising pages here: https://bedfordhospitalcharity.org.uk/london-marathon/

Thank you, Millie, Sue and Kate – you are amazing, and we are behind you every step of the way. We'll introduce you to more of the team tomorrow.
