👏 CREW NEWS! 👏

This one’s a big one!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Gwen successfully passed out as helm today!

Her passout comes after months of training, both ashore and afloat, and a week long Command Course down at the RNLI College in Poole.

Gwen’s assessment started with theory and was followed by 2 and a bit hours on the water being put through her paces by Coastal Lifeboat Trainer, Ben! We’re happy to report, she smashed it all!

🗣️Gwen said about passing out as helm, “I’m delighted! But I couldn’t have got here without the belief, help and support from the whole crew. So thank you to everyone”.

We couldn’t be prouder of you Gwen! ❤️

Why I joined the RNLI:
“I first became a part of the RNLI as a lifeguard in the summer. Then when I got into medical school, I wasn’t able to continue being a lifeguard, so joining the RNLI lifeboat stations was a way of staying in touch with the RNLI; using and maintaining the skills the RNLI taught me, and getting out on the water. Moving around as a junior doctor being part of a lifeboat station has also given me an instant group of like minded people and a community to be a part of, which I am grateful for”.

My favourite thing about being on the crew:
“Getting out on the boat - Seeing puffins and dolphins! Being part of a community of amazing individuals from different backgrounds”.

My best memory:
“As a Lifeguard - being apart of the 2012 Olympics. As Beaumaris Lifeboat crew - seeing puffins when out training!”.

Interesting fact about me:
“I used to compete in international surf lifesaving competitions”.

📣 SHOUT 📣

A training exercise that turned into a shout, proving that our volunteer crew are always ready for the real thing!

🛟 A request was received at 2.46pm on Thursday 22nd October from HM Coastguard. We were tasked to assist the Penmon Mobile Coastguard team with a medical evacuation from near the Gazelle Hotel, on the banks of the Menai Strait.

🚤 Our Beaumaris Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat and her crew were already afloat on a training exercise and immediately left the exercise area to go to the casualty.

🚁 In the meantime it became possible for a road ambulance to transfer the casualty, who had fallen from a wall, to the green at Beaumaris for transfer to hospital by the Wales Air Ambulance.

Once this was confirmed, the presence of our lifeboat, which had yet to reach the scene, was no longer required, and the lifeboat returned to her previous exercise.

🗣️ An RNLI spokesperson said, “The lifeboat was tasked as a precaution in case of a delay in the arrival of the road and/or the air ambulance. Fortunately, this did not occur and our presence at the scene was therefore not required”.

👏 Although we weren’t needed in the end, it was a good bit of real life training while out on exercise, and showed great professionalism from our crew, transitioning swiftly from training to shout. This was also a really good example of team work with multiple agencies working together!

“Chatting to the customers, and helping to educate people on water safety and the RNLI ethos”.

My best memory:
“Being part of the RNLI 200th celebration and attending Westminster Abbey”.

Interesting fact about me:
“I do pyrotechnics part time and set up shows around the country. I have also started Bee Keeping”. 🐝

“I don’t have a favourite, all of the items in the shop are really good!”.

📢 SHOUT 📢

🛟 On Sunday 11th October at 7.53pm we received a request from HM Coastguard to investigate a report of a motor yacht having lost propulsion in the vicinity of Puffin Sound, near the Menai Strait.

🚤 Our Beaumaris Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, Annette Mary Liddington, with her volunteer crew, launched and proceeded towards the vessel. Once on scene, and after confirming that all was well with the two occupants of the vessel and that they were wearing life jackets, an assessment was carried out by the lifeboat helm in consultation with the Coastguard.

It was decided that as no other suitable vessel was in the vicinity, and as the craft was in an area with a strong tidal flow and with freshening winds expected, it would present a navigation hazard to other vessels. Therefore, for safety reasons, the boat would be towed to the nearest available safe mooring.

As work was commencing on the moorings at Beaumaris, the boat was towed to the nearest alternative, Port Penrhyn.

⏱️ Once this had been completed at 9.54pm, and with the occupant electing to remain aboard, the lifeboat was released by the Coastguard to return to her station to be refueled, cleaned and left ready for service.
