Moth monitoring 🔎

We're very grateful to local experts who volunteer their time to survey wildlife across our nature reserves. This year one of our volunteers, Denis, started monitoring moths at our Big Pool Wood Nature Reserve using a light machine, recording a total of 108 species!

This included barred rivulet and small seraphim, which have scarcely been recorded in the area. Other moths of interest include the obscure wainscot, the brown-veined wainscot (a reed bed and wet-ditch specialist) and the beautiful clouded magpie pictured here. 💚

A fungi walk at Bryn Ifan 🍄 Taith gerdded ffyngau Bryn Ifan

A keen group of individuals came together to learn about the grassland fungi that grow on the hillside of Bwlch Mawr on the Llŷn Peninsula, focusing on colourful waxcaps.

Fungi expert Debbie Evans led the day, teaching how to identify waxcaps and how important their presence on the land is. A total of eleven different waxcap species were identified across the day, and with the added presence of the sun shining during our search – it was a very successful outing! 💚

Jumping for jays! 💚

Jays are shy woodland birds, rarely moving far from cover. They're easier to spot in autumn as they break cover to look for food.

The acorns that jays collect and bury ready for the winter often get forgotten, growing into oak saplings and eventually trees! 🌳

Before and after Himalayan balsam control. What a difference a community can make! 🌸

For more than a decade, volunteers and partners across the Afon Dyfrdwy catchment have been helping to tackle invasive non-native species and restore riverside habitats.

From removing Himalayan balsam and Japanese knotweed to improving access and enjoyment of our waterways, local communities have been at the heart of this work. Healthier rivers benefit both wildlife and the people who use them, from anglers and kayakers to walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.

That work continues today through the Restoring the Dee Together project, working in partnership with the Dee Trust and Buglife Cymru to protect the Afon Dyfrdwy and inspire more people to take action for nature. 💚

Even at 500m on top of Bwlch Mawr we have invasive sitka spruce self-seeding and posing a risk to our priority habitats. Rather than felling we have been ring barking the trees to create standing dead wood, a fantastic habitat for a whole range of species! 🪲
