We are incredibly proud to share that both Alex Stace and Bangor Marrow were honoured with the prestigious High Sheriff Awards in recognition of outstanding dedication to volunteering while at Bangor University.

The High Sheriff Awards are one of the most distinguished honours in Bangor University’s volunteering calendar. Established in 2007 by former High Sheriff and Bangor University Council Member Dr Dewi Roberts and his late wife, Dr Sheila Roberts, the awards recognise the exceptional contribution Bangor University students make to the local community through voluntary work.

This year’s ceremony was held in the Council Chambers. The awards were presented by the Gwynedd High Sheriff 2026, Llinos Angharad Owen; the Undeb Bangor Vice-President for Societies and Volunteering (2025–26), Muhammad Hasibuzzamaman Sarker; and Dr Dewi Roberts.

The event was also attended by Professor Enlli Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Welsh Language, Culture and the Region) and Head of College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Marian Wyn Jones, Chair of Bangor University Council.

This award represents further recognition of the work undertaken by Alex Stace and Bangor Marrow in leading impactful recruitment, fundraising, and awareness campaigns; developing inclusive bilingual outreach; creating evidence-based educational content; and building strong connections between Bangor University and the wider community through Anthony Nolan.

Congratulations to all the other volunteer groups and individual winners: your work is truly inspiring to us.

🏆✨ Bangor Marrow at the Undeb Bangor Societies & Volunteering Awards 2026 ✨🏆

We are incredibly proud to share that Bangor Marrow was recognised with multiple awards at this year’s Undeb Bangor Societies & Volunteering Awards.

We have been recruiting lifesaving stem cell donors, raising vital funds, and increasing awareness of blood cancer and stem cell transplantation. We have worked closely with the North Wales Medical School to help develop and to call on Anthony Nolan to produce inclusive bilingual literature and marketing materials for our use on campus and for other Marrow groups in Wales, and created engaging evidence-based content to build a volunteering project that is active, well organised, and strongly connected to both Bangor University and the wider community.

During the Volunteer of the Year presentation, the Vice-President for Societies and Volunteering said:

“As a project leader driving impactful recruitment, fundraising and awareness campaigns, Alex has links with the North Wales Medical School, developed inclusive bilingual outreach and created engaging evidence-based content. Through [their] mission and dedication, [they] have built a project that is not only active and well organised, but deeply connected to both our University and the wider community.”

These achievements reflect the dedication of every volunteer who has given their time, energy, and passion to help save lives through stem cell donation.

A huge thank you to Undeb Bangor, Anthony Nolan, North Wales Medical School, our committee and volunteers, supporters, and everyone who has joined the stem cell register, donated, or helped spread awareness.

This recognition belongs to all of us. Together, we are proving that students can make a real difference and save lives.

Varsity merch collection is coming up — and while you’re picking up your kit, you’ve got the chance to start Varsity as a lifesaver.

Bangor Marrow will be outside Undeb, Pontio (17–18 March) signing students up to the Anthony Nolan stem cell register — and we’re turning it into a competition.

Introducing the Varsity Lifesaver League 👀

🥇 The club that signs up the most new potential stem cell donors wins campus-wide bragging rights.
📊 We’ll track sign-ups per club across the three days.
📣 The winning team gets the shoutout (and the glory).

It takes 5 minutes. Just a simple cheek swab. For someone with blood cancer, it could be their only chance of a transplant.

Bangor MedSoc × Marrow are teaming up for a Pancake Day–themed pub quiz at the Harp Inn!
Expect quiz rounds , good vibes, and a great excuse to spend your Tuesday evening with friends.

This event is in support of Bangor Marrow, a student-led group working with Anthony Nolan to recruit potential stem cell donors, raise awareness, and fund lifesaving research and patient support. Marrow groups across the UK recruit 1 in 4 people who join the Anthony Nolan stem cell register — so every event really does make a difference.
