Binsey the Red Squirrel and Jackie our Education officer went to visit Richmond Hill Primary School with Marion from Solway Red Squirrels .

Binsey enjoyed meeting all the children and their wonderful teachers.

Jackie told a fun story to engage the younger children to help learn about red squirrels and other woodland animals living here in the Lake District.

It was wonderful to talk to the older children about their personal experiences with Red Squirrels.

Raising awareness with the next generation is extremely important and reconnecting children to Mother Nature has extremely positive outcomes with both mental and physical health.

If you would like Jackie & Binsey the Red squirrel to visit your primary school , scout group, after school clubs, please email your details and we will arrange a visit with you !

Local community working together to help save Red Squirrels
❤️💪👏fantastic!!!

We are holding a launch meeting to gauge interest/ support in setting up a Cockermouth Area( areas around Lorton/ Loweswater/ Buttermere Community Red Squirrel Group as part of the National Lottery funded Red Squirrel Recovery project.
The project is about increasing Community involvement and raise awareness of the Red Squirrels plight and working together as a community to provide safe habitat, education of the community, monitoring our Red squirrels and management of grey squirrels including through vaccine trials.
We need volunteers to help in a variety of different roles including monitoring live camera feeds, web site development, fund raising, monitoring feeders, grey squirrel management , community education plus lots more. Please come along and let’s get lots of the community involved, lots of us doing just a bit to help out local Reds across Cockermouth, Lorton and the valley to Loweswater and areas at Buttermere.
Securing the future of Red squirrels by the community working together.

Urgent notice ‼️

Today we have had a suspected case of Squirrel Pox Virus.
Location at : MILLBECK

Please can we ask you good folks living at Millbeck to please empty all feeders and disinfect , please stop feeding for the present time!

Please let us know if you see sickly looking red squirrels?
SPV causes them to be very slow and unbalanced, open weeping sores around eyes, face and genitalia.
They will struggle moving , climbing or running away!

This is so sad and not a good start to the weekend!

To contact us please email on [email protected] or message us on fb or instagram.

Thank you

Well can you believe we are now in June!!!

June is a busy month for our Red Squirrels as females will be in their peak time of raising their second litter of kits.

Red squirrels have two litters a year if Mother Nature has provided enough food.

If you have red squirrels on your garden feeder , they will appreciate some In-shell hazelnuts, pine nuts, small amounts of chopped apples (avoid cores and pips) and carrots, the odd walnut as a treat will also be gratefully eaten!

You can even tie up some Cuttlefish bones or deer antlers for extra calcium for the red Mamas!

What ever you feed just remember we are just Supplementary feeding red squirrels, this hopefully will help them have a second litter of kits through summer and survive periods of natural food scarcity, we want to encourage red squirrels to still forage naturally so we recommend only providing small daily amounts of treats.

For further advise on feeding reds please email: [email protected]
