As Wales approaches the Senedd elections, voters are being presented with confident claims about how to tackle bovine tuberculosis (bTB), particularly the assertion that badger culling is a proven solution.
Perhaps unintentionally, but these claims do not reflect the full scientific evidence. They are selective interpretations, not established facts.
This is misleading as the peer-reviewed research concludes something very different.
Over the next week, Badger Trust will examine the scientific evidence and data behind some key claims about badger culling in England, as presented on the “Share the Facts” page of the TB Free England website.
The ‘56%’ claim
A reported 56% reduction in TB incidence is often cited as evidence that "wildlife control works," but this interpretation is misleading and entirely misrepresents the study.
The Birch et al. study does not separate badger culling from other measures like cattle testing, biosecurity & on farm hygiene.
In fact, the authors state they cannot distinguish which intervention caused the change.
It is clear that the study results do not attribute the reduction to culling, and presenting it as such is misleading.
