women perform the majority of labour in global coffee production. Often up to 70% of the work from planting to processing, depending on the region.

But they own fewer farms and their access to resources such as land, credit, and training is limited compared to men.

With 2026 the , we’re celebrating the women shaping the future of agriculture.

Today on we shine the spotlight on Mrs. Rizkani, co-founder of Asia’s first women’s coffee cooperative, Koperasi Kopi Wanita Gayo in Indonesia, now 680 members strong.

She’s overcome many challenges as a female coffee farmer, from gaining trust in a male-dominated supply chain, experiencing verbal harassment, to managing child and household responsibilities.

Today she prioritises the well-being of her members, and through Fairtrade they have upskilled in areas both on and off farm, building a sense of belonging and self-confidence.

Joe Human of Cumbria Fair Trade Network introduced "Black Gold" film at Keswick Alhambra Cinema last week with this current message from Tadessa Meskela

"I would be happy to share the benefits of Fairtrade to our coffee communities. Keswick Fairtraders and Keswick Rotary have supported the coffee farmers in many ways with income generating activities like raising coffee seedlings, vegetables for their own consumption and for sale in the market, a flour mill and more, all through a revolving savings and credit scheme.
The support Keswick Fairtrade and Keswick Rotary for women in the Choche community has changed the perception men have for women, and this support has become a model and extended to the western and southern part of Oromia.
What you started has impacted the life of our coffee communities.
The support from Fairtrade, Rotary and organisations like the Costa Foundation has all together supported more than 450 new projects since the establishment of the union in 1999. Indeed, what Keswick Fairtrade and Keswick Rotary have done for Choche is remarkable and if people in the North share a little of what they have to the poor in the South the world would have been a better place for all human beings."
