John Newton spent his early life at sea, press-ganged into the navy, flogged for desertion, and later working the brutal Atlantic slave trade as a ship's captain. It's a background that makes his hymns about grace anything but theoretical. He later became a supporter of William Wilberforce's campaign to abolish slavery altogether.

His turning point came during a violent storm that nearly drowned him. He remembered the hymns of Isaac Watts his mother had sung to him, and later became curate of Olney, Bucks.

As curate of Olney, Newton compiled the Olney Hymns with his friend William Cowper. What came out of that partnership, and out of a life that had seen the very worst of human cruelty, still gets sung every Sunday.

🛤️ "All the way my Saviour leads me, O the fulness of his love…"

F***y Crosby (Frances J van Alstyne) never saw the road she was walking. She had been blind since she was six weeks old.

The "fulness of his love" was not a theological abstraction for her. It was what she had walked on, every single day, without being able to see what was coming next.

The hymn ends not with the journey but with the destination: perfect rest in my Father's house above. That is where the whole thing is heading.

Words: Frances J van Alstyne (F***y Crosby), 1820–1915

🙏 She never saw the page, but she saw her Saviour clearly…

F***y Crosby (Frances J van Alstyne) was blinded at six weeks old by a doctor's catastrophic mistake. Her father died the same year.

She grew up in rural New York memorising whole books of Scripture by ear, and spent years feeling something was missing, until 1850, singing Alas, and did my Saviour bleed, it wasn't missing anymore.

What followed was thousands of hymns written in her head, dictated from memory each morning, three or four a week for decades. She gave away almost everything she earned, spending it on helping New York's homeless and addicted. She died in 1915 at 95.

Her hymns are direct, warm, and gospel-shaped.

🌍 “Into a world so bruised by sin…”

Our songs should not whitewash the condition of this broken world. This hymn starts where the people who sing it are: a world marred by sin.

This hymn does not downplay the issue but reminds us of the only real solution. Christ took on our sins, appeased God’s wrath, rose victoriously, and there is no condemnation for those in him. A strong, gospel-centered hymn for the church to sing.
