Mary has been faithfully nurturing a Messy Church where people of all ages can belong, build relationships and explore faith together. And recently, it became the setting for a very special celebration: nine-year-old Maddie’s baptism, surrounded by family, friends, Messy Church folk and her wider church family.

Today marks the beginning of the Season of Creation - a time for Christians around the world to celebrate God’s wonderful creation and think about how we can care for our shared home. This year’s theme is 'Living Water', inspired by the beautiful vision in Ezekiel 47 of water flowing out to bring life, healing and renewal.

As our Messy Summer Sundays journey comes to an end, we'd love to celebrate with you!

Over the past few weeks we've explored the values of Messy Church through prayer, creativity, kindness and time together. We hope these simple moments have helped Messy Church communities discover that God is with us wherever we are.

As summer draws to a close and many of us begin returning to familiar routines, let's take a moment to pray together. Wherever this new season takes you, may you know that God is with you.

We're praying today for everyone affected by what happened at Big Church Festival yesterday, in particular for the person who died and their family and friends, those who were injured, and everyone who was there and witnessed what happened.

We are so sad to hear about what happened at Big Church Festival yesterday.

Our hearts are with the person who died and their family and friends, with those who were injured, and with everyone who was there and witnessed what happened or is processing the news of hearing about it afterwards.

And we’ve been thinking particularly about the children and teenagers involved and the parents and carers who are supporting them.

Because they might be feeling all sorts of things today.

They might be frightened or upset. They might be asking questions you don't know how to answer. They might be desperately disappointed that a weekend they’d been looking forward to has suddenly ended.

They might be all of those things.

Or they might seem completely fine and want to talk about something else.

If you're alongside a child or teenager who is trying to make sense of what happened, you don't need to have a brilliant conversation about it. You don't need to explain everything. And you certainly don't need to have all the answers.

You can just be with them.

Listen to what they've heard. Ask what they're thinking. Let them ask the awkward questions. Say “I don't know” when you don't know.

And perhaps, in the middle of it, you can chat to God together too.

Not with a carefully constructed prayer. Just honestly.

“God, this is really sad.”

“I don't understand why this happened.”

“Please look after the people who are hurt.”

“I'm disappointed that we can't stay.”

“Why did you let this happen?”

You can ask him questions or just leave space for God to communicate to you and your child or teenager.

And if your child doesn't want to talk about it? That's okay too. You can leave the door open and come back to it another time.

We're praying today for everyone affected by what happened, and particularly for the children and young people who are making sense of it in their own way.
