A recent investigation by The Guardian has exposed a troubling trend: toddlers and very young children are being targeted, and even turned into influencers, promoting skincare products.

This is not harmless content. These practices are very dangerous for a vulnerable population like children.

From a dermatological perspective, this raises serious concerns:
🔬 Children’s skin is more sensitive and vulnerable to irritation
⚠️ Unnecessary products can disrupt the skin barrier
📉 Early exposure to beauty standards can impact mental wellbeing

At EADV, we stress a simple message:
👉 Healthy skin in children does not require complex routines or active ingredients.

Stronger safeguards, clearer regulation, and responsible communication are urgently needed to protect children from harmful trends and commercial pressures.

The European Commission is developing a Council Recommendation on cardiovascular health checks, and EADV has submitted a formal response to the call for evidence.

▪️Our core ask is simple: a diagnosis of a chronic inflammatory skin disease should systematically trigger a cardiovascular risk assessment.

▪️The evidence is clear. Psoriasis patients are up to 50% more likely to develop CVD. Atopic dermatitis is linked to myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure.

▪️ Early treatment of skin disease has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk, making access to dermatology care itself a prevention measure.

▪️Inflammatory skin disease is not a niche issue, and the Council Recommendation must reflect that.

🏛️ A historic step for skin health in Europe.

On 3 June, the European Parliament's SANT Committee held its first-ever dedicated Exchange of Views on skin disease prevention and the public health risks associated with sunbed use.

Addressing the MEPs, Prof. Alexander Stratigos and Prof. Aleksandra Lesiak called for stronger EU action on skin health, highlighting the growing evidence linking sunbed use to skin cancer and the significant prevention opportunities that exist through awareness, education and regulatory action.

📢 Key messages from EADV:
☀️ Stronger action is needed to reduce exposure to artificial UV radiation and address the risks associated with sunbed use. To achieve this, EADV calls to an European ban of sunbeds for minors.
❤️ Chronic inflammatory skin diseases should be better integrated into wider EU health initiatives, including cardiovascular health strategies.
🧠 Mental health support must become part of dermatological care pathways.

We want to thank the SANT Committee, and in particular Chair MEP Adam Jarubas and MEP Stine Bosse, for their engagement, their thoughtful questions, and their commitment to keeping skin health on the European Parliament's agenda.

Skin health is public health.
This discussion marks an important step towards greater political recognition of the burden of skin diseases across Europe.

Not always visible. Often misunderstood. Frequently delayed in diagnosis.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can have a profound impact on daily life, physically and emotionally. Hidradenitis Suppurativa Awareness Week is a moment to move the conversation forward.

By strengthening awareness, we can support faster diagnosis, improve patient pathways, and foster a more informed and compassionate approach to care.
