United Way mourns the loss of Andy Simko, a longtime United Way retiree and pioneer who helped build the strong connection between Labour and United Way that continues to make a difference in our community today.

Andy made history as the first Labour Staff member for United Way in Canada, laying the foundation for the Labour Programs and Services work we continue today.

He also initiated Labour Appreciation Night and established the Charles E. Brooks Labour Community Service Award, creating lasting traditions that celebrate labour’s contributions to our community.

As we prepare for our 49th Labour Appreciation Night in November, we recognize Andy’s lasting legacy in bringing Labour and United Way together in support of our community.

🎃 A little fall fun with On Track to Success! 🍂

Our On Track to Success students, caregivers, and families came together for a fun-filled Caregiver Engagement Night featuring pumpkin carving, fall crafts, seasonal treats, and plenty of opportunities to connect!

A big thank you to our Women United member who led the event and helped bring everyone together for an evening of creativity, connection, and community. 💛

At United Way, we know that when families feel connected and supported, students are better equipped to succeed. We’re grateful for opportunities like these that bring our On Track community closer together!

As part of our monthly Caregiver Engagement Series, these gatherings help build connections, strengthen family relationships, and create a supportive community where students can thrive.

Our Women United members had a wonderful time attending Freeds of Windsor Girls Night Out, coming together for an evening of fashion, fun, and community impact!

Through Women United, members help support United Way’s On Track to Success program, empowering Grades 9–12 students in Leamington, West Windsor, and Downtown Windsor with academic support, mentorship, career exploration, and financial assistance to help them reach their goals.

We’re proud to honour Bruce Awad of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) Active Retired Members (ARM) Chapter 9 as the recipient of the Maureen Curtis Community Impact in Retirement Award!

Bruce has dedicated more than 40 years to community service, social justice and strengthening the connection between the labour movement and the community. A longtime OSSTF leader, Bruce continued his union involvement after retiring from education in 2011, serving as ARM Chapter 9 President from 2017 to June 2026. He continues to serve as Past President and Treasurer.

Bruce has also been a passionate advocate for individuals with autism and their families, founding a summer support program that provides meaningful experiences for participants and much-needed respite for families. In recognition of his impact, the program was renamed the Bruce Awad Summer Program for Individuals with Autism in 2010.

Through his ongoing community involvement, charitable work and advocacy for accessible public health and home care, Bruce continues to demonstrate that retirement is an opportunity to keep making a difference.

Presented by United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent and the Windsor and District Labour Council, the Maureen Curtis Community Impact in Retirement Award recognizes retired trade unionists who continue to serve their communities through volunteerism, advocacy and leadership.

We’re also proud to recognize Brian Masse, recipient of the Charles E. Brooks Labour Community Service Award, for his longstanding contributions to organized labour and the Windsor-Essex community.

Last night, Freeds of Windsor Girls Night Out brought the fashion, fun and feel-good vibes! From shopping and a fabulous fashion show to delicious apps and an incredible crowd, it was a night to remember.

With a sold-out crowd of 200+ women, the energy was unmatched, and the impact is even bigger! ❤️

A huge thank you to Freed’s for organizing this amazing event and donating all proceeds to United Way’s On Track to Success program, helping local youth stay on track to graduation and build brighter futures.

And to all the amazing women who came out to shop, enjoy the runway and support the cause, thank you for making the night such a success! ✨

Celebrating Community Leadership! 🤝

In partnership with the Windsor and District Labour Council, we’re proud to recognize Brian Masse with the Charles E. Brooks Labour Community Service Award!

For nearly 30 years, Brian has been part of the fabric of Windsor-Essex, supporting newcomers and helping people with disabilities access meaningful employment through the Multicultural Council of Windsor-Essex , serving on Windsor City Council, and representing Windsor West in Parliament for 23 years.

A steadfast supporter of organized labour and the broader community, Brian has stood alongside workers on picket lines, championed good-paying jobs, and advocated for union-built opportunities and community investment. Beyond his work in public office, he has supported charities, youth sports, neighbourhood organizations and countless local causes that make a difference in people’s lives. From helping advance the Gordie Howe International Bridge to playing an important role in the grassroots campaign to establish Ojibway National Urban Park, Brian’s contributions have helped shape Windsor-Essex and created a lasting impact for generations to come.

Labour recognizes Brian as a brother and ally whose commitment to workers, families and the wider community reflects the values of solidarity and service.
