SCHEDULE UPDATE

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will conduct a non-aerobatic performance over the Captain Michael VandenBos Public School in Whitby, Ontario, at approximately 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The school is named in honour of Captain Michael VandenBos, a Snowbirds pilot who tragically lost his life during a training flight near our home base of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1998. We are proud to fly over the school that carries his name, and we send our best wishes to the students, staff, and families of the Captain Michael VandenBos Public School for a wonderful year ahead.

Time is subject to change due to weather or other operational considerations.

Due to the lack of attendance during our open hours in our clubroom on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, our Branch executive had to make the difficult decision to close on those days for the rest of the summer.

Monday CLOSED

As most know, Canada came into its own during the horrific and costly battle for ‘Vimy Ridge’ in April of 1917.

2027 is the 110th Anniversary and a major ceremony is being planned. A very special “Royal Canadian Legion” focused tour is being planned for RCL members and friends/supporters.

The April 6 - 14, 2027 VIMY 110 Anniversary etc. tour that several local RCL members and friends have signed up for is getting closer.
More attendees are welcome!
The current full double occupancy package (includes air flights) base rate is $6,366.00 p.p. (includes private group fee, twin room fee, tipping, $200. savings voucher etc.)

in 1936, The Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France was unveiled by King Edward VIII in a ceremony attended by thousands of Canadian Veterans and dignitaries. Located on Vimy Ridge—the site of Canada’s historic 1917 victory—the monument was commissioned and funded by the Canadian government. The Legion organized a massive pilgrimage for the event. More than 10,000 Canadian Veterans and their families attended, with 6,000 travelling on five ships chartered by the Legion. In total, over 100,000 spectators were present for the unveiling.

We held our Fifth Annual ‘Veterans and Life Members’ Appreciation luncheon today. We thank MPP Lorne Coe for sponsoring our event this year.
It was great to see many of our honoured guests in our clubroom. Everyone enjoyed the delicious lunch that was prepared and served by our ‘Ladies Auxiliary’ catering ladies.

Today, we celebrate 100 years of The Royal Canadian Legion.

1915–1925 – Formation of Veterans’ Organizations
- Returning Canadian soldiers from the First World War faced injuries, trauma and limited support. Veterans formed associations to advocate for care and benefits. Many of these groups later merged to form the Canadian Legion.

1925 – Founding at the Unity Conference
- Veterans’ groups, led by the GWVA, unite to form the ‘Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League’.

1926 – Official Incorporation
- The Legion is incorporated by Act of Parliament on July 17 — the date now celebrated as the Legion’s official anniversary.

1959–1961 – The “Royal” Designation
- The Legion drops “British Empire” from its name in 1959, and in 1960, Queen Elizabeth II grants consent for the Legion to use the title “Royal.” The organization is formally renamed ‘The Royal Canadian Legion’ in 1961.

What began as Veterans uniting to support one another, grew into a national organization dedicated to serving Veterans and their families, honouring the Fallen, and strengthening communities across Canada.

For a century, generations of Legion members and volunteers have carried this mission forward.
They have advocated for Veterans, supported families in times of need, kept Remembrance alive, engaged young people, raised funds, opened Branch doors and brought communities together.

Today, we honour everyone who has helped shape the Legion’s first 100 years—our Veterans, members, volunteers, Branches, supporters and the Canadians who have stood beside us.

Thank you for being part of this remarkable legacy.

As we celebrate our history, we also look ahead. Together, we will continue serving Canada’s Veterans, strengthening our communities and ensuring Remembrance endures for generations to come.

Happy 100th anniversary to The Royal Canadian Legion.

The Whitby Legion is participating in the Saturday/JULY 25th Town of Whitby ‘Home Sweet Home’ event.

From 11 am to 3 pm, we will have a B**r Garden (19+ to purchase) and a BBQ outside on the parking lot on the south side of the Whitby Legion. We thank the ‘Town of Whitby’ for supplying the picnic tables.
Everyone is invited into our downstairs Club Room to see the items that we have there.

We look forward to meeting many of our members and community citizens at this event!

We thank the ‘Whitby Mayor’s Community Development Fund’ for assisting us in participating in this event.
