June is National Indigenous History Month. A time to learn, reflect and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

Throughout the month, communities across Alberta are hosting events, workshops, cultural celebrations and more. These gatherings offer meaningful opportunities to connect, learn and honour Indigenous voices and traditions.

🪶 Find events happening in your community: www.albertafindaprovider.ca/news/honouring-stories-and-traditions-2026-indigenous-history-month-in-alberta

Can't attend an event? There are many other ways to participate in learning and reflection:

🧡 Read Indigenous-authored books, watch films, or listen to podcasts that share Indigenous perspectives and experiences

🧡 Learn about the traditional territories and Treaties where you live, work and gather

🧡 Support Indigenous-owned businesses, artists and creators in your community

🧡 Take time to learn about the histories, resilience and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples

One of the most meaningful parts of family medicine is building long-term relationships and supporting patients through every stage of life. 🩺

Thank you, Dr. Stefanek, for sharing what you love most about working with your patients and for the lasting impact you continue to make.

Q: What do you love most about working with your patients?

A: “Many things! But one fun thing is that some have been with me for over 20 years. I have seen kids grow into adults and go on to have their own families. I’ve had patients go into medicine because they see the important work we do and are inspired by that.”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a timely reminder that supporting mental
well-being is essential in both our personal and professional lives. It’s an opportunity to reduce stigma, encourage open conversations and prioritize self-care while also checking in on colleagues, friends and loved ones.

By fostering understanding and compassion, we can help create environments where everyone feels supported and empowered to seek help when they need it. 💚

If you or someone you know needs support, consider talking to your healthcare provider about available mental health resources and services.

Documenting your preferences for your health care and personal matters helps to prepare your loved ones for the future. 🤍 This is called Advance Care Planning. You can make sure the people you trust know what to do if there is ever a time that you are unable to make or communicate decisions yourself.
There are lots of free and low-cost community resources to help you with this process, including your health care team. A PCN social worker can help answer your questions and provide you with guidance around completing these documents.

Ask your primary care provider for a referral, or learn more about Advance Care Planning: https://albertafindaprovider.ca/news/speaking-for-yourself-advance-care-planning

Today, on World Family Doctor Day, we are celebrating the incredible impact family physicians have on the health and well-being of our communities. 🩺 Thank you, Dr. Sheik for encouraging healthier lifestyles and helping patients build habits that support their physical and mental well-being at every stage of life.

Q: What’s one simple change people can make to improve their overall health?

A: Increase exercise/physical activity. Physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases, but also improves mental health and mobility as we age.

This National Nursing Week (May 11–17, 2026), we proudly celebrate the incredible nurses who care for patients across Alberta.

From Primary Care Networks to community clinics, nurses play a vital role in supporting patients at every stage of their health journey, providing compassionate care, building trusted relationships and helping people navigate the health system.

This year’s theme, The Power of Nurses to Transform Health, recognizes the profound impact nurses have in shaping better outcomes for individuals and communities.

To all the nurses in our PCN and in clinics across our network: thank you for the knowledge, dedication and care you bring every day. Your work truly makes a difference.

Dr. Truong sheds light on the full scope of family medicine. 🩺 We’re grateful for the care and expertise you and all other providers bring to your patients!

Q: What is one misconception people have about family medicine?

A: That we're not as skilled as specialists. Reality: family doctors are highly trained
and highly knowledgeable in various areas of medicine. We need broad and deep medical knowledge to diagnose and treat the wide range of conditions we see daily. This comprehensive skill set allows us to provide holistic, patient-centred care.

Wherever life happens, safety matters. 🛡️

This week is Safety and Health Week, a time to focus on preventing injury and illness at work, at home and in our communities.

Simple steps can go a long way in keeping you and those around you safe:

✅Keep your spaces clear, well-lit and free of tripping hazards to help prevent falls
✅Practice everyday habits like handwashing and staying home when sick to reduce the spread of illness
✅Stay up to date with routine check-ups, screenings and vaccinations

Healthier communities start with safer environments. If you have questions about what you can do to help prevent injury or illness, talk to your primary care provider or health team.
