Today, carapace Community Response honours and remembers Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).

Red Dress Day is a call to recognize the ongoing violence experienced by Indigenous communities and the systemic injustices that continue to place Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people at risk. It is also a call to action — for accountability, safety, equity, and meaningful change.

At carapace, we see how colonialism, homelessness, poverty, addiction, mental health challenges, and criminal justice system involvement intersect to increase vulnerability and create barriers to support and justice. We believe community safety cannot exist without dignity, advocacy, culturally responsive supports, and systems that truly serve people.

Today we wear red to honour those who are missing, those whose lives were taken, the families still seeking answers, and the communities carrying grief and resilience. We encourage our community to take time today to learn, reflect, listen to Indigenous voices, and advocate for change. ❤️🪶

Our first community clean-up of 2026! ☀️🌿

Thank you to our group of volunteers who came out this last weekend to participate in cleaning up around our city!

The Horizons Hurricanes were out cleaning up around Walmart on Friday May 1. carapace and volunteers were out cleaning up by Walmart, south side Tim Hortons, behind Safeway, Canadian Tire and Castle Restaurant on May 2. The SDA Church Group was out on May 3 cleaning up around the high school and recreation grounds. Over 60 bags of trash were collected total! ☀️

A special thank you to Canadian Tire who provided rakes to use to help in the efforts 💪

We hope to see another great turn out for our fall clean-up scheduled for October 3! If you or your group are interested in more information or how you can help, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] 🩷💚

Until the fall! 👋

✨ Happy New Year and Welcome to 2026!

carapace Community Response wishes everyone a safe, healthy, and hopeful start to 2026.

We are pleased to announce that carapace has received funding from the Alberta Law Foundation to support a community survey project focused on identifying criminal justice and legal service needs. This work will help amplify community voices and inform more responsive, equitable and effective services for people impacted by the justice system.

We look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks and engaging community members, service providers, and partners through this process.

carapace Community Response is committed to truth and reconciliation in action. Through our justice focused program, we work alongside Indigenous community members every day to support healing, accountability, and meaningful alternatives to incarceration.

In alignment with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action:

#30 – We support efforts to end the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in custody, standing for accountability and systemic change.

#31 – We are committed to building and supporting community based alternatives to imprisonment that address root causes and strengthen Indigenous resilience.

Our programs reflect this commitment: we are doing the work, walking beside the community, and striving toward a justice system that is equitable, compassionate, and rooted in reconciliation.

That’s a wrap on our 2025 community clean ups! ✨🌲🌳☀️

THANK YOU to our group of 19 volunteers who came out on this beautiful day today to lend a hand. We changed things up a bit this time around and started at Walmart, focussing on the field to the west of the south side Tim Hortons, the mall, Castle, Canadian Tire and Safeway for a grand total of 60 bags of garbage! If you couldn’t make it out today and want to get involved, we always encourage cleaning up your area of the city as you can, every bit helps! As always, thank you to the City of Wetaskiwin for their donation of a garbage bin.

Keep an eye on our page…as the warmer months wind down, we have some exciting things in store this winter!
