Mazal tov to Eliya Cohen and Ziv Abud. 💍🇮🇱

On October 7th, Eliya and Ziv ran together to the shelter in Re'im when the Nova massacre began. Ziv survived by hiding beneath those who were murdered around her. Eliya was taken from that same shelter and held in Gaza for 505 days - for much of it, believing Ziv hadn't survived.

She had. She was home in Israel, waiting for him, and fighting for his return the entire time.

This past Wednesday, in front of 1,000 guests, Eliya and Ziv stood beneath the chuppah, with a powerful message of resilience, survival, and joy. They begin the next chapter of their life together, strong and with support from around the world.

We were honoured to have hosted Eliya and Ziv at two Friends of JNF Canada events in 2025 - the Breakfast for Israel in Montreal, and our Toronto Negev Dinner. Their courage, and the love that carried them both through the unimaginable, left a lasting impression on everyone who met them.

On behalf of Friends of JNF Canada and the entire Jewish community across Canada - Mazal tov, Eliya and Ziv. May your life together be so full it dwarfs everything that tried to take it from you. 💙

At the Rachashei Lev Children's Home on the Sheba Medical Centre campus, families already coping with a child's cancer treatment may be forced to run for shelter four or five times in one night.

The two upper floors, which house approximately 40 families, have no protected space. Parents carrying sick children or managing wheelchairs and medical equipment must navigate multiple flights of stairs in seconds.

This project will install two fully equipped, accessible shelters - one on each upper floor - at a cost of $180,000 CAD each.

The result is more than physical protection. It gives families the peace of mind to focus on their child's treatment and recovery.

An evening we won't forget. 🕯️

On Wednesday, we welcomed 150 people to Oakdale Golf & Country Club for an evening with Mia Schem, released hostage and Nova Festival survivor, marking the launch of our Negev 2026 campaign.

The evening also featured Shy Klein, a Toronto photographer who survived the Nova Festival attack, sharing the stories behind 54 photographs he captured that day.

Though not feeling well, Mia insisted on joining us. She spoke candidly about her captivity, and how singing Shir HaMa'alot each day with the other girls helped sustain her faith and resilience.

Her words were a powerful reminder that for returned hostages, the journey doesn't end with release - giving profound meaning to this year's Negev project, Beit Nova, supporting survivors and bereaved families just like Mia.

After attacks on Kiva's Bagel Bar in Toronto and Nöam Restaurant in Montreal, Torontonians lined up at sunrise to sell out Kiva's stock. Montrealers gathered for vigils and launched a fundraiser to help Nöam rebuild.

The High Holidays are only 37 days away. 🍎🍯

This year, we are honoured to support a family, community, and resilience project that means so much to us.

For the past three years, families across Israel's Lachish region have lived with relentless trauma, grief, and loss. In communities like B'nei Dekalim, nearly every family has been affected. Today, up to half of the region's residents are living with trauma-related conditions - a crisis that demands urgent care and support.

The Beit Elkana Centre for Holistic Therapy was created to change that. Inspired by the vision of Elkana Wiesel z"l, who fell in battle in January 2024, the Centre will provide compassionate, life-changing care for children, teens, parents, and adults - healing the mind, body, and soul.
