It takes a community to build a community.

Behind every backpack we hand out are volunteers, partners, donors and friends who continue to show up and believe in what we’re building.

Year Four gave us a lot to smile about — more than 1,000 backpacks delivered and countless moments like this along the way.

Now we’re carrying that same energy into Year Five.

Thank you to everyone who continues to have our back.

Another Monday. Another reminder of why we do this.

Seeing a room full of families, kids, volunteers and backpacks will never get old.

The summer events may be behind us, but the work doesn’t stop when the school year starts. We’re already collecting supplies, building new partnerships and getting ready to make Year Five our biggest year yet.

Every backpack starts somewhere — a donation, a volunteer, a conversation, someone deciding they want to help.

And then eventually, it ends up right here.

School supplies should prepare a child for learning—not push a family beyond its means.

An August 2026 national survey found that about 1 in 6 Canadian back-to-school shoppers expected either to spend beyond their means or be unable to afford all the supplies their children needed.

That is the gap Bags Without Barriers works to close. Every stocked backpack removes essential purchases from a family’s shopping list while helping a child begin the school year prepared and confident.

Our final stop of the 2026 backpack season took us to Hamilton, where we joined the community at Tim Hortons Field and helped send local kids into the school year with new backpacks, school supplies and books.

There’s something special about seeing the bags leave our tent and go directly onto the backs of kids who are excited to start school.

Hamilton was the perfect way to close out Year Four — surrounded by families, volunteers, partners and the community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this summer possible.

Now the work begins for Year Five.

Backpack on. Ready for the week.

The school year is officially in full swing, and this is what it’s all about — making sure kids can walk into school feeling prepared, confident and ready to learn.

Every backpack we give out is another kid starting with the tools they need.

And while Year Four may be wrapped up, we’re already working on what’s next.

A backpack is only part of what a student needs to start the school year ready.

In a 2026 Canadian survey, 14% of back-to-school shoppers said they expected to spend beyond their means to get all the supplies their children needed.

More than just backpacks.

A huge shoutout to First Book for helping us make sure kids didn’t just leave our events with a new backpack and school supplies, but with books of their own too.

Seeing families picking out books to take home was such a great addition to our events this summer.

A new week, another reminder of why we do this.

A backpack might seem like something small, but for a kid starting the school year, having the right supplies and feeling prepared can make a big difference.

Year Four allowed us to put more than 1,000 backpacks into the hands of kids and families — and we’re already working toward making an even bigger impact in Year Five.

Sometimes support finds you when you least expect it.

Today while picking up school supplies at a local Walmart, a woman saw what I was buying and asked what it was for. After hearing about Bags Without Barriers, she handed me $20 toward our next supply run.

Completely unexpected and very much appreciated.

Thank you for believing in what we’re building. Every little bit helps us keep showing up for kids and families in our communities.
