The 2024-2025 Annual Report of the Office of the Correctional Investigator reaffirmed what so many with Mental Illness have experienced in federal prisons:

➡️Poor and outdated policies hinder treatment.
➡️There is insufficient training for staff working with prisoners that have mental health issues.
➡️A lack of effective mental health screening for prisoners.
➡️Inconsistent or unavailable programs to help people once they leave prison.
➡️The prioritizing of security measures like the use of force over therapeutic supports.

Wrongful convictions cannot be understood simply by looking at whether someone has pleaded guilty. It is about who is believed, whose experiences are understood, and who were overlooked.

Women's experiences within the justice system are shaped by gender-based violence, caregiving responsibilities, poverty, trauma, race and expectations about how women are supposed to behave. These factors influence how women are perceived, how their actions are interpreted and how they navigate the system.

Today, we reflect on the human cost of injustice.

The overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in Canada's justice system is the direct result of systemic racism, colonization and residential schools. The legacy of residential schools didn’t end with their closure... it continues in the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in prisons today.

The 94 Calls to Action are a roadmap, and we must continue to commit ourselves to the work that remains. Reconciliation requires action, accountability and the willingness to change.

📢Gender Equality must include justice-impacted women and gender-diverse people.

Systems should recognize the unique experiences and needs of each individual, while ensuring equal access to healthcare, education, employment, community building and meaningful reintegration.

Gender equality means that a person's dignity, rights and opportunities are upheld everywhere 🧡
