February is Black History Month.
The stories of Black communities are woven into the fabric of Canada’s history. As we mark 30 years of Black History Month in Canada, we honor the legacy and contributions of Black Canadians across generations from those who helped build our country to those shaping its future.

We also recognize the importance of capitalizing “Black” not just a color, but a shared cultural identity rooted in resilience, history, and community. This month is a time to reaffirm our commitment to equity, inclusion, and opportunity, and to celebrate Black excellence, past and present.

Dear Partners and Stakeholders,
As we close the year, we extend our warmest holiday greetings and our sincere appreciation for your trust, collaboration, and continued support.

This year marked important milestones for CBDOC. From convening over 200 stakeholders at our inaugural International Conference on Black Immigration and Refugees, to advancing policy dialogue on housing, employment, and inclusive immigration, your partnership has helped amplify Black migrant and refugee voices across Ontario. Together, we contributed to critical advocacy efforts during the housing crisis, supported evidence-based policy reforms, and strengthened pathways for Refugees leadership and community resilience.

These collective efforts reflect what is possible when shared purpose, lived experience, and strategic collaboration come together. As we look ahead to 2026, we remain committed to deepening impact, strengthening systems, and advancing equitable, community-led solutions.

May this festive season bring you rest, renewal, and joy with loved ones. We look forward to continuing this important work together in the year ahead.

With gratitude and warm wishes,
Centre for Black Development Options Canada (CBDOC)

Muzira Tonny Tonito, Director of Advocacy and Partnerships at CBDOC Canada, spoke out against Bill C-12, highlighting its potential harm to vulnerable refugee claimants. The proposed one-year asylum bar would penalize those facing trauma, homelessness, and language barriers, stripping them of essential supports like legal aid and housing.
