Black People United for Change

Black People United for Change Black People United for Change Listens is a virtual emotional support and listening initiative created to provide a compassionate, judgment-free space for individuals navigating stress, trauma, and the impacts of anti-Black racism. Founded as an extension of the Black People United for Change organization, LISTENS was launched to address a critical gap in accessible mental health support for Black communities in Canada.

We started LISTENS because studies and lived experiences show that members of the Black community often face stigma, bias, and barriers within the traditional mental health system. Many individuals who have experienced racism, trauma, or emotional distress do not have safe spaces to be heard without judgment. Recognizing this, our team of trained volunteer listeners established a platform that prioritizes empathy, inclusivity, and understanding, creating a space where every voice matters.

Our mission is to ensure that emotional support is accessible, free, and tailored to the needs of those who need it most. Through LISTENS, we hope to:

Empower individuals to safely express their feelings and experiences.

Connect people to helpful resources and guidance.

Reduce the isolation and stigma often felt by survivors of anti-Black racism.

Foster healing, resilience, and community care while creating a model of support that benefits anyone in need.

Ultimately, Black People United for Change LISTENS strives to be more than a support service — we aim to be a trusted ally, a haven, and a catalyst for emotional well-being in our communities.

When a society removes the legitimate paths to survival for our already marginalized black youth, "What are they supposed to do?" Canada rarely connects the dots to the systematic stripping away of employment opportunities for our black youth. More investments are made into stiffening the law to continue incarcerating black youth than investments made into fixing a broken, systemic racist system.

Jamaica's painful history of slavery and colonialism began with European conquest in the late 1400s and continued for centuries under British rule, built on the forced labour of enslaved Africans. Today, I cry for the people of my mother's country of birth and for the generations of Jamaicans who continue to face the lasting effects of colonialism. Many people believe that powerful countries, especially the United States, have too often viewed Jamaica through a colonial lens, where the voices and interests of ordinary Jamaicans are treated as less important. Critics of the 2026 Transit Hub System say it places an unfair burden on the people of Jamaica and remind us that colonialism did not simply disappear; it changed form. Not only in Jamaica, but around the world, Black people continue to be exploited and too often have little say in how they deserve to live. From the Caribbean to Africa and throughout the diaspora, the struggle for true self-determination, dignity, and equal treatment is far from over.

Police officers in Montreal, the city of my birth so heavily driven and motivated by anti-Black hate and racism collected pieces of the dreadlocks from black people during police interventions. These uniformed, licensed criminals are suspended with pay or on desk duty still getting paid? And I don't want to hear anyone downgrade the or deem Jamaica as an underdeveloped country because they're Police officers don't wear body cams. Montreal is one of the major cities in Canada 🇨🇦 and they don't wear them either. I guess it's easier to do hate crimes at night dressed in blue than it would be at night in bright white sheets like the good old days! Bien, non? I wonder 🤔 what the newly launched Inclusion, Rights and Diversity Council thinks of this?

Regardless of anyone's race this is the cruelest way for anyone to leave this world 🌎 What hurts me is that the ethnic group to which these people belong to do jot face their children being denied jobs, being called an animal, or their kids going missing or be abused in school! It doesn't matter what these people do. As long as they're not black justice will find a way to reach them! Black People in Canada 🇨🇦 are born guilty because of the color of their skin! The Canadian government would prefer a guilty black man die in their prison than deport them back to their country much less consider early parole!
