Arkel's co-artistic directors Marie Bérard (violin) and Winona Zelenka (cello) are joined by guest artist Angela Park (piano) for an evening of three piano trios, each written at a turning point.
🎼 Beethoven: Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97 "Archduke"
Composed in just three weeks in 1811, the "Archduke" marked Beethoven's last public appearance as a pianist. Expansive, noble and warm, it remains one of his most beloved chamber works.
🎼 Hatzis: Old Photographs
Opening with an introspective piano theme reminiscent of Schumann, the music slowly drifts toward the early 20th-century popular idioms of Astor Piazzolla.
🎼 Shostakovich: Piano Trio
Written in 1944 amid the chaos of the Second World War and dedicated to his dear friend Ivan Sollertinsky, this is one of Shostakovich's most emotionally charged chamber works, full of raw intensity and biting irony.
