A new Breakthrough T1D-funded clinical trial is launching in Canada. Led by Dr. Ahmad Haidar at McGill University, the study will explore whether tirzepatide can help improve automated insulin delivery (AID) systems and reduce the burden of meal-time diabetes management for people living with T1D.

The research aims to move us closer to fully automated insulin delivery, helping improve lives today and tomorrow through life-changing breakthroughs in T1D care. ๐Ÿ’™

Happy Birthday, Rufus! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’™ Today we're celebrating a very special member of the T1D community.

Do you have a photo of Rufus? Share it in the comments and help us wish him a very happy birthday! ๐Ÿ“ธ Lyla and Rufus

For thousands of children across Canada, Rufus is one of the first friends they meet after a type 1 diabetes diagnosis. Through the Breakthrough T1D Bag of Hope, Rufus helps children and families feel a little less alone as they begin their journey with T1D.

For years, Rufus has brought comfort, confidence and countless hugs to children learning to navigate life with type 1 diabetes. Today, we're celebrating the difference he continues to make for families from coast to coast.

Tzield has been approved by the FDA for use in stage 3 type 1 diabetes (T1D). It will soon be available to people aged 8โ€“17 within 8 weeks of diagnosis, with a prescriptionโ€”the first therapy of its kind designed to modify the course of the disease.

Tzield works by helping protect insulinโ€‘producing cells in the pancreas, which can support better glucose control, reduce insulin needs, and lower the risk of low blood sugar over time.

While this is an important step forward, it is currently approved only in the United States. Access in Canada will depend on future regulatory review and availability. This milestone builds on decades of support from Breakthrough T1D, including research funding, advocacy, and investment that helped advance this therapy.

Canada helped change the world with the discovery of insulin. Now, we have an opportunity to lead the next breakthrough.

Breakthrough T1D Canada is calling on the federal government to invest $62 million over five years to establish the Breakthrough T1D Network for Canada (BTNC), a national initiative that would accelerate curative type 1 diabetes research, attract global clinical trials, and strengthen Canada's leadership in regenerative medicine.

This investment would:
โ€ข Accelerate cell-based therapies for the more than 300,000 Canadians living with T1D
โ€ข Double the number of clinical trials conducted on Canadian soil
โ€ข Generate an estimated $575 million in economic value and create more than 120 high-skilled jobs

Every federal dollar invested would be matched, unlocking a total of $100 million in public-private investment to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs.

With world-class researchers, institutions, and scientific momentum already in place, Canada is uniquely positioned to lead. T1D is among the diseases closest to a curative breakthrough, and Budget 2026 is an opportunity to build on our legacy of innovation and help bring cures closer to reality.

Exciting progress in T1D clinical trials! This update builds on more than 25 years of clinical islet transplant experience in Canada - an approach that has only recently become available in the U.S. This trial uses a milder immunosuppression regimen (called tegoprubart) in combination with deceased donor islet transplantation. This new immunosuppression shows promising potential to improve current treatments while research into stem cell-derived islet therapies continues.
