For many people living with type 1 diabetes, DKA is not just a medical term. It’s a moment they remember clearly. A missed symptom. A frightening hospital visit. A time they realized something was seriously wrong.

These stories can be difficult to share, but they can also help others recognize warning signs earlier, feel less alone, and better understand the realities of living with T1D.

Have you or someone you love experienced diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or managed ketones as part of T1D care? We want to hear your story.

Your experience will help inform future resources for the T1D community, and Abbott will provide a donation to Breakthrough T1D for every story submitted.

Every breakthrough starts with a community that believes change is possible. In 2025, supporters, donors and volunteers across Canada helped drive meaningful progress in type 1 diabetes research, advocacy and support. Together, we continued working toward a future where living with T1D is safer, easier and one day, no longer necessary.

Our 2025 Impact Report highlights the progress your support made possible and the breakthroughs that are helping move the T1D community forward.

That’s why Breakthrough T1D Canada’s virtual meetups create space for real conversations, support, and connection with others who truly get it. From newly diagnosed families to people who’ve been living with T1D for decades, these sessions bring the community together to share experiences, ask questions, and feel less alone.

💬 Bellamy says it best: "Type 1 diabetes isn't always easy, and you don't always see the struggles... but just like Max Domi says and shows every day, T1D doesn't define me." 💪

Bellamy is 9 years old and has been living with since he was 5. When he was first diagnosed, he received a Bag of Hope from Breakthrough T1D Canada, a free resource kit filled with educational tools, guides, and support materials for kids and their families.

It also came with Rufus, the bear with type 1 diabetes, who’s been by Bellamy’s side ever since, helping him feel seen, supported, and never alone.

T1D on the Hill 2026 reminded us of something powerful: when our community comes together, we are heard. 💙

Earlier this month, delegates from across Canada gathered in Ottawa for T1D on the Hill 2026 to advocate for a future free from type 1 diabetes. Families, children, adults living with T1D, and supporters met with MPs, Senators, and decision-makers to share personal stories and push for progress in research, access, and support.

Together, 28 delegates engaged with 49 parliamentarians and helped build momentum for the Breakthrough T1D Network Canada. From meaningful conversations to public statements of support, the impact of this year’s advocacy event was undeniable.

To every delegate who shared their voice, thank you. Your courage, honesty, and passion are helping move this work forward and bringing us closer to a world without T1D.
