We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of Canada’s most cherished and widely performed choral composers, Ruth Henderson (November 23, 1932 – June 9, 2026).

Ruth was a gifted and passionate pianist and composer whose more than 200 choral works have become a beloved part of Canada’s musical landscape. Her music has long been close to the heart of the Amadeus Choir, and we are especially grateful for her support of our ensemble over the years.

Her artistry, generosity, and enduring contributions to choral music will continue to inspire us and choirs across the country for generations to come.

III. Prayer for the Rivers
(Prayer for the Disappearing Water)

There is a stone buried in a river
it says
if you read this, then weep.

Hunger stone, famine, severe drought, drying up
the Rhine, the Danube, Mississippi, Rio Grande,
Yangzhe, Lake Mead, Colorado, the Po

Mighty, thirsty, disappearing
Rivers
Mighty, thirsty, vanishing
Nîpîy

Indus, Teesta, Arkansas, the Loire,
The Greats shrinking
Oh, how the mighty fall.

The Greats shrinking
Oh, how the mighty fall.

Amadeus Choir is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Cris Derksen yesterday in a car accident, which has also left her wife, Bobby, in critical condition. Having just performed Mass for Nipiy with Cris one week ago, this loss feels especially close to home.

We are holding Bobby in our thoughts and hope for her recovery, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Cris’ family, friends, our tight-knit musical community - and all who were touched by her artistry.

Cris was an extraordinary composer, cellist, and collaborator — a powerful and inspiring voice in the Indigenous classical community. It was an honour to share music with her.

Thank you again to everyone who made it to our Wanuskewin performance Saturday! We were honoured to collaborate with Cris Derksen, Andrew Balfour, and Sherryl Sewepagaham to perform their exquisite, beautiful, and meaningful music in this Sound Ceremony. We were reminded that reconciliation is a journey, and as Andrew Balfour said, “this is the Canada I want to be a part of.”
