Crohn's and Colitis Canada was founded in 1974 by concerned parents who believed their children, and others living with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, deserved better care and better lives. That founding principle guides us today as we invest in research, offer patient support programs, and team up with volunteers to take on inflammatory bowel disease.

Meet Nathan: volunteer, fundraiser, student, brother, and one incredibly resilient person!

Nathan was just 9 years old when he became seriously ill and was later diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

Crohn's touches many branches of his family tree, including his younger brother, who was diagnosed in 2022 and received an AbbVie IBD Scholarship last year. Together, they've supported one another through the ups and downs of living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

With Crohn's disease affecting multiple generations, Nathan and his loved ones have become dedicated to Gutsy Walk, raising funds each year through fundraisers, custom t-shirt sales, and the incredible support of friends and family. This year, Nathan was at the top of the leaderboard in London, raising over $6,100!

Today, he's heading into Grade 11, working, spending time with friends, and giving back as a volunteer and fundraiser. Along the way, he's built a strong support system of family, friends, and healthcare providers who have been there every step of the journey.

"I have learned how strong I really am and how much perseverance I have. If we all work together, I hope one day we can find a cure for this disease.”

"I have learned that I am stronger than I know."

Words from Shevon, whose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have impacted more than just her physical health.

Diagnosed as a child, Shevon has also navigated trauma, anxiety, and the lasting emotional effects of chronic illness while learning to find strength, resilience, and self-compassion.

What inspires someone to go from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patient to future physician?

For Gayashan, it started with a doctor who changed the course of his life. 🩺

Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis while pursuing his master's degree, Gayashan faced multiple hospitalizations before finding a treatment that helped him achieve remission. That experience inspired him to pursue medicine and one day provide the same life-changing support to others!

Today, as a third-year medical student at the Temerty School of Medicine at the University of Toronto (UofT), he's combining research, advocacy, and medical training to help improve the future of IBD care.

It's time to get to know Bethany, one of this year's AbbVie IBD Scholarship recipients!

After being diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) during her physical therapy studies, Bethany experienced firsthand the challenges of balancing her health with academic goals.🎯

Today, she's turning those experiences into action through her doctoral research at the University of Toronto (UofT), focused on improving rehabilitation support for people living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

When she's not advancing patient-centered research, she's giving back to the IBD community through volunteering and fundraising.
