The World Cup kicks off in Canada on June 12, and over a million visitors are expected to stream into the country as Toronto and Vancouver welcome fans for the chance to watch their teams play on the world’s biggest stage. These fans will have spent major dollars on accommodations and tickets. Canada itself will have spent over $1 billion to host the 13 games. Hospitality workers with Unite Here! Local 40 in Vancouver and UNITE HERE Local 75 in Toronto are set to welcome soccer fans to their cities but at the same time they’re asking: what about us?

The cost of living in each city is remarkably high. Workers say that it’s getting harder to pay for housing and other necessities. The same employers set to rake in the profits from the World Cup—nightly room rates in some locations are going for upwards of $2,000—refuse to pay workers enough to get by. As they fight for the ability to thrive in their cities, hospitality workers have this message for World Cup fans: Welcome to Canada and enjoy the games. It may have cost a lot for you to get here, but we’re paying the higher price.

Always By My Side – Why My Union Matters
Luz, Toronto Marriott City Centre – Room Attendant, 27 years

I told myself I’d try being a room attendant for one month – that was 27 years ago. When I started, my hotel was not unionized. The work was challenging and I only made $11 an hour. I and my coworkers knew we deserved more, and ten years ago, we came together to fight for our union. In 2018, we won our first contract, and I found my strength in my coworkers, my community, and my Union.

Today, I earn over $27 an hour – but it’s about more than wages. Thanks to my Union, I have access to incredible benefits for me and my kids. I have job security. Most importantly, my Union gives me strength beyond my workplace.

Right now, in Parkdale, we’re fighting against our Landlord’s unfair rent increases in the middle of a housing crisis. Thanks to my Union, I have the strength and support to stand with my neighbours and fight for our home. That’s what solidarity looks like. After all these years, I’ve lea– we don’t win alone.

This Mother’s Day, we recognize the strength of the union mothers who keep our hospitality industry running every single day. From early mornings to late shifts, they show up for their families, their coworkers, and their communities.

Being union means more than a job. It means better wages, benefits, protections, training opportunities, and support that helps working mothers build stability for themselves and their families. Because every mother deserves dignity at work, respect on the job, and a union that stands beside them.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible union mothers across UNITE HERE Local 75.

Celebrating Arab Heritage Month!
Meet Hanane Karim 👋🏼, a Host at the Omni King Edward Hotel in Toronto, and Local 75 Executive Board Member

“Being in a union means I have real power and I’m not alone. I have a voice, and I share that voice with thousands of workers. My union helped me grow and gave me the confidence to speak up for myself and others. Back home in Morocco, I worked in union jobs, and unions always had my back. That’s why I’m proud to lead my coworkers in the fight for equality. No matter who you are or where you come from, we are here to fight for you.“
