Today marks the 6th annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, formerly known as Orange Shirt Day. On this day and everyday thereafter, Unite Here Local 75 honours residential school survivors and recognize the ongoing effects of the residential school system. We remember the children who never came home.
We are proud to stand next to our Indigenous comrades in our shared fight against systemic oppression and we commit to taking action towards reconciliation.

During Labour Day, we asked our members a simple question: What does a union mean to you?
Their answers say it best. Watch why we do what we do and why we’ll keep doing it for the next generation.

Labour Day 2026!

09/07/2026

Before Labour Day was a holiday, it was a fight.

In 1872, thousands of workers marched through Toronto in the fight for a nine-hour workday and to demand the release of union leaders who had been arrested and charged with criminal conspiracy for striking. Their fight helped change Canadian labour laws and paved the way for unions to organize openly.

Their demands may seem simple today: a fair day’s work and a voice at work. But those rights had to be fought for.

The wages, benefits, protections and time with our families that many of us enjoy today came from workers who stood together before us.

And the fight didn’t end there. Workers are still fighting for better wages. For safer workplaces. For respect. For security. For a fair chance to build a good life.

So this Labour Day, remember:

What we have today was won by workers who stood together.

And what workers have tomorrow will depend on our strength and solidarity today.

Know the history. Value what we have. Keep fighting for a better future.

Happy Labour Day!
