We have a winner!! Actually, two winners! This year, we hosted our tenth annual watermelon eating contest. But this year we had two categories: one for those who thrive on a little friendly competition, and one for those who prefer their watermelon enjoyment a little slower.

Join us as we explore natural dyeing of wool through a Two-Eyed Seeing lens, bringing together Indigenous ways of knowing and being with Western science. This approach creates an authentic, land-based experience that deepens our connection to place.

Workshop: Natural Dyeing in an ECE environment through a Two-Eyed Seeing Lens
Date: September 19
Time: 9:30 am - 3:30 pm (6 hours)
Cost: $20.00
Presenters: Nadine McSpadden & Zoe McDonell
Location: Child Care Options CCRR, 101-13583 81 Avenue, Surrey

We will discuss Indigenous harvesting protocols, understand plants as our relatives, and incorporate respect, responsibility, and reciprocity into the process of harvesting fibre for dyeing. This is a hands-on workshop.

Participants will create a friendship bracelet using the wool we dye. Nadine will also speak about the importance of building relationships with Indigenous families, how using authentic Indigenous resources supports those relationships, and how to use these resources in ways that make Indigenous connections explicit.

Notes:
-6 hour certificate of attendance
-Doors open at 9:00 am
-Arrive by 9:00 AM to enjoy networking opportunities and earn up to an additional 30 minutes of professional development before the workshop begins.

Collecting traces of children’s play and capturing the beauty in ordinary moments.

You know we love loose parts, and our child care pop-up play event was no exception. We had a wonderful collection of boxes that we carefully arranged into a beautiful invitation to play. We imagined all the ways the children might build with them, but we never would have guessed they would lay the boxes flat and take turns running across them. Again and again. Taking turns, problem-solving together, and finding joy in the simplest idea.

The beauty in this ordinary moment? Children outside, creating together, sharing space, and sharing our enthusiasm for cardboard boxes. Forty-eight children from different centres, all playing together. Yes, there were big feelings. Sometimes there was big behaviour, too. But the overall vibe was… joy.

Sometimes you just need to go outside. And sometimes, you just need a pile of cardboard boxes. ❤️
