Every day in Kenya, a family’s worst fear becomes reality. New reports show that 23 children are reported missing daily across the country, with thousands of cases of abduction, abandonment, and exploitation recorded within just 15 months.

Behind every number is a child someone’s daughter, someone’s son vanishing from homes, schools, and communities. A voice silenced. A future interrupted. A family left in pain and uncertainty.

This is not just a statistic. It is a national child protection emergency in Kenya that demands urgent action from all of us.

We must strengthen community vigilance, report cases immediately, support rescue efforts, and demand stronger systems that ensure no child is left unprotected or forgotten.

Let us act with urgency. Let us protect our children. Let us bring them home. 💔💙

Building Stronger Social Workers for Better Child Protection 💙

On 17th April 2026, Lift the Children (LTC) conducted a physical training session for social workers from supported children’s homes at Wings of Compassion Children’s Home in Mirema, along Lumumba Drive.

The training aimed to equip practitioners with practical and statutory skills in implementing Case Management Form 1: Child Assessment Form, in line with the Children Act (2022).

A total of 30 social workers participated in the session, creating an engaging and interactive learning environment that allowed for deeper practical application.

Key Highlights from the Training:
🔹 Strengthening understanding of the legal framework guiding child assessment
🔹 Practical walkthrough of assessment areas including health, education, and psychosocial wellbeing
🔹 Interactive role plays that helped social workers identify trauma-informed cues and practice capturing the child’s voice authentically

What stood out most?
The training went beyond theory. It challenged mindsets and strengthened practice.

Social workers shared that:

The training was productive, practical, and eye-opening

Many experienced a shift from viewing assessment as a “form-filling exercise” to a meaningful conversation with the child

There is now greater awareness on avoiding assumptions, leading questions, and rushed assessments

Participants felt more confident in applying professional judgment, patience, and empathy during assessments

Key Commitments Moving Forward:
✔ Taking time to build rapport with children before assessment
✔ Listening without judgment and avoiding retraumatization
✔ Improving documentation accuracy and follow-up on cases
✔ Using child-friendly approaches and minimizing interrogation tones

This training reaffirmed that effective child assessment is not about filling forms it is about understanding the child, protecting their dignity, and making informed decisions for their future.

Together, we continue to strengthen systems and people for better care and protection of every child.

Empowering Leaders to Bridge the Gap: Training on Special Needs Awareness 💙

Lift The Children Africa continues to take bold steps toward inclusive care by partnering with Blooms Garden Schools to host a specialized training for directors of all LTC-supported children’s homes. The focus: early identification and management of special needs.

Children’s homes are on the front lines, receiving children in distress every day. Identifying developmental challenges early is not just important it is essential for timely evaluation and intervention.

The goal? Moving from reactive care to proactive intervention.

Directors were taken through the critical cycle of support:
• Early Identification – Using screening tools to detect developmental delays
• Early Evaluation – Ensuring timely professional assessment
• Early Intervention – Applying strategies that can transform a child’s life trajectory

Guided by passionate occupational therapists, participants gained practical skills and tools to ensure no child falls through the cracks.

We were also privileged to hear from Mutunga Mutua, Director of Blooms Garden and author of Teaching with a Twist, who shared powerful insights on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

According to the Autism Management Bill, 2025, and reports from the Autism Society of Kenya, approximately 1 in 25 children in Kenya are living with autism.

A key highlight was understanding “Screen Autism” (Acquired Autism)—where excessive screen exposure in early childhood can lead to autistic-like traits such as speech delays, social withdrawal, and limited eye contact. Directors are now better equipped to create sensory-first environments that prioritize human interaction.

This training empowers leaders to:
• Identify challenges early and reduce long-term trauma
• Build inclusive and empathetic care environments
• Advocate confidently for professional support for every child

A heartfelt thank you to the Blooms Garden team for sharing our vision of a world where every child regardless of ability is given the opportunity to thrive.

🌍 Annual Assessment Visit – Western Kenya

We recently conducted our annual assessment visits to children’s homes in Western Kenya, engaging with leadership teams, staff, and families as part of our continued commitment to improving child care and protection.

This visit covered homes at different stages of the care reform journey, where we held meaningful discussions on:
✔️ Strengthening governance and accountability
✔️ Supporting transition from institutional care to family-based care
✔️ Enhancing case management and record keeping
✔️ Promoting child-centered practices that prioritize the well-being of every child

A key highlight was a joint meeting bringing together Directors and Managers, creating a platform for shared learning, reflection, and collaboration across homes.

We were encouraged by the progress made especially in areas such as case management and transition planning and also identified opportunities for growth, particularly in governance strengthening and financial accountability.

Most importantly, we had the opportunity to engage with board members, caregivers and parents, reinforcing the critical role families play in ensuring children grow in safe, nurturing environments.

At Lift the Children, we remain committed to walking this journey together supporting homes as they transition towards sustainable child welfare programmes that place children and families at the center. 💙

Today we celebrate a powerful milestone in the journey of young people supported by Lift the Children. 🎉💻

For the past 16 years, Lift the Children has walked alongside children growing up in homes we support through monthly support, mentorship, and opportunities for growth. Today, we are proud to see some of these young people take a major step toward independence and self-reliance.

Through a Website Design Training Program, implemented in partnership with Computer Pride, these young people gained practical IT and web development skills. As part of their training, they successfully developed websites for children’s homes supported by Lift the Children, helping improve the homes’ online visibility and digital presence.

We are proud to celebrate them as Junior Stack Developers, now equipped with the skills to support organizations and build sustainable futures for themselves.

This is more than a training ,it is a story of growth, empowerment, and transformation. 🌱

Congratulations to all participants of LCT Cohort 1 and thank you to Computer Pride for partnering with us to empower the next generation. 👏

This month, the Lift the Children team conducted impactful Positive Parenting Trainings in Kangemi (Westlands) and Mai Mahiu, Naivasha, reaching 50+ parents and guardians of children supported through our partner homes Meta Meta Children’s Home in Kangemi and Lemalah Children’s Home in Mai Mahiu.

The purpose of these trainings is to strengthen families and prepare them for the safe reunification of children currently living in institutions, ensuring every child can grow in a loving and protective family environment. Through practical learning on positive discipline, communication, and emotional support, caregivers are empowered to provide stable and nurturing homes.

We were also encouraged by the participation of community leaders, community health workers, and community child protection champions, whose collaboration is key in supporting families, safeguarding children, and sustaining successful reintegration within the community.

Together, we are restoring families, protecting children, and building brighter futures. 💙
