It was fitting that Cade Smith (Abbotsford, B.C.) recorded the final out for the Guardians in their ALDS clinching win over the White Sox last night.

Forty-one years ago today, I was a 12-year-old watching a game between the Blue Jays and Royals and asking my dad, "Why are we pitching to George Brett?"

Thirty-four years ago today, you can probably remember where you were when Roberto Alomar homered off Dennis Eckersley.

And 45 years ago today, Steve Rogers pitched the Montreal Expos into the NLCS.

Canadian Nick Pivetta set a new Canadian playoff record with his 4th career start. He also built on his own record with 26.1 IP and 31 strikeouts in his post-season career.

Whalley Little League made history at our AGM as we elected Cheryl Blake as the first female President in our league’s history! Congratulations, Cheryl, an exciting and well-deserved milestone for WLL.

I also want to sincerely thank every member of our outgoing Board. Volunteering for a youth organization takes a tremendous amount of time and commitment, often behind the scenes. Thank you for everything you gave to our players, families and Whalley Little League.

As my time as President comes to an end, I leave with an incredible amount of pride and gratitude.

I started at Whalley as a parent and coach in 2016, joined the Board in 2023, moved onto the Executive in 2024, and had the privilege of becoming President later that year. What started as wanting to help create a great experience for my own kids became a commitment to every child and family who calls Whalley Little League home.

This past season, we welcomed 345 players across six divisions, along with our 9U, 12U and 14U girls teams. But the numbers only tell part of the story. What I’ll remember most are the kids, families, coaches, volunteers and friendships that make Whalley such a special community.

It has been one of the greatest honours of my life to serve as President of this incredible league.

I wish Cheryl and the entire new Board nothing but success. Take care of this league, protect its incredible legacy, and most importantly, always remember why we are here:

Hello Whalley Little League Families,

Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on Tuesday, October 6, and we are asking members of our Whalley Little League community to consider stepping forward and joining our Board of Directors.

Whalley Little League has a long and proud history, but continuing that legacy takes volunteers willing to give some of their time to help keep our league strong for the next generation of players.

What does being a board member involve?

Board members help with the operation and direction of the league throughout the year. Depending on your role and availability, this can include helping with registration, teams and divisions, tournaments and special events, fundraising, facilities, equipment, social media, sponsorships, or simply lending a hand where it is needed.

You do not need to be a baseball expert or have previous board experience. We need parents and community members with different skills, backgrounds and ideas who share one thing in common: wanting to provide our kids with a fun, safe and inclusive place to play baseball.

And please don’t let being new to a position hold you back. Help and support will be provided to anyone who needs it during the transition. Current and experienced board members will be available to help explain responsibilities, answer questions and make the transition into your new role as smooth as possible. You will not be expected to figure everything out on your own.

The commitment varies depending on the position. Board members attend meetings, take responsibility for their area of the league, and work together as a team throughout the season. There are larger roles and smaller roles, so there are opportunities for people with different amounts of time to give.

Our league cannot operate without volunteers. The more people who step forward, the more we can spread out the workload and continue improving the experience we provide for our players and families.

If you have ever thought about getting more involved, this is your opportunity. Even if you are unsure what position might be right for you, please reach out and have a conversation with us.
