OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE ITAUKEI CULTURAL SOCIETY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
We acknowledge a recent social media post expressing concerns about our Society's representation and leadership within the iTaukei community in BC.
We wish to address this matter professionally and respectfully for the sake of transparency and unity.
On Representation:
The Itaukei Cultural Society of BC has never claimed to be the sole or official leader of all iTaukei people in British Columbia. We are a registered, volunteer-based, non-profit cultural society comprised of families and individuals who have come together to preserve and promote our iTaukei culture, language, and traditions, primarily through community engagements.
We are deeply concerned to learn that some members of the community feel excluded, and we sincerely apologize if our outreach has not been sufficient. We are committed to improving our communication and engagement.
Our Society is non-denominational, and non-political. We respect and treat all faiths & communities equally. Our executive members serve as volunteers in their personal capacity with outstanding leadership.
We agree that unity is essential and that division only weakens our community. We do not believe that public disputes on social media serve our collective interest.
So we ask you, our community:
Instead of asking "Why are they leading?", please ask "How can we help them preserve our culture?"
We need you. The culture needs you. Our children need all of us - together.
If you feel we have failed in our role, come and sit down with us. Our door is open. Our role is to serve, and we can only serve better with you.
We formally invite any community member who has concerns, suggestions, or a desire to contribute, to contact us directly.
We remain focused on our mandate: cultural preservation for the Itaukei and community unity
