From the classrooms of SDCI to the pinnacle of NASCAR, Cole Pearn turned his passion for racing and engineering into a championship-winning career.

Alumni Spotlight: Cole Pearn

Growing up in Mount Brydges, Ontario, Cole Pearn attended Strathroy District Collegiate Institute while developing an early passion for motorsports. He began racing go-karts at just six years old and later competed at nearby Delaware Speedway.

Former SDCI teachers remember Cole as a student who wasn't always enthusiastic about the demands of school yet also recall his tendency to move quickly through whatever he was doing. Years later, his career would take him into the demanding world of NASCAR, where speed must be balanced with precision, preparation, and teamwork.

After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a degree in mechanical engineering in 2006, Cole pursued a career in professional motorsports.

His greatest achievement came in 2017, when he served as crew chief for Martin Truex Jr., leading Furniture Row Racing to the NASCAR Cup Series championship.

After stepping away from full-time NASCAR competition, Cole returned to Canada to pursue business opportunities in British Columbia. In 2025, he reunited with Truex for another run at the Daytona 500.

Cole Pearn's journey reminds us that success doesn't always follow a conventional path. From SDCI to NASCAR's biggest stage, his story demonstrates what passion, technical knowledge, and determination can accomplish.

**SCI Alumni Spotlight: Keeping our history alive.**

Alumni Spotlight: Kris Pearn

Raised near Delaware, Ontario, Kris Pearn attended Strathroy District Collegiate Institute before pursuing animation at Sheridan College. From those Southwestern Ontario roots, his creativity would eventually take him into some of the world's leading animation studios.

Pearn built his career as an animator, character designer and story artist, contributing to films including Open Season and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. His storyboarding earned Annie Award nominations, and he later stepped into the director's chair, co-directing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and writing and directing Netflix's The Willoughbys. He has also passed his experience on to another generation of artists by teaching character design at Sheridan College.

After years working in the United States and Europe, Pearn returned home to Southwestern Ontario, maintaining the local connection that began long before his international career.

Kris Pearn's journey from SDCI to the international animation industry is a reminder that creative careers can begin anywhere, including right here in our own community.
