We’re so happy to be part of this project to help keep our community clear of litter and provide employment opportunities!

☀️The sun is shining in St. John's today and so are we! We are thrilled to introduce the Pitching In project, a partnership between the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador, The Gathering Place and the City of St. John's.

Pitching In is a collaborative that brings community partners together to help keep downtown St. John's cleaner while creating meaningful employment opportunities for Guests of The Gathering Place.

Thank you to Mayor Danny Breen, numerous City Counselors, and representatives from other areas of government, community organizations, and the public for joining us today to pick up the first piece of litter👏

What is the program designed to do❓
➡️Pitching In will complement the City's exisiting cleaning initatives by providing additional, regular cleaning throughout the downtown area. This includes parks, sidewalks, bus stops and other public spaces.

Who will be doing the cleaning❓
➡️Guests of The Gathering Place will be hired on a part-time basis to carry out the work, with training and supervision provided by staff.

What are some of the other benefits of Pitching In❓
➡️In addition to helping create a tidier, more welcoming downtown, Pitching In provides participating Guests with an opportunity to earn income, build skills, gain valuable work experience and strengthen their path toward future employment.

Congratulations to our very own Susan Smith for her nomination for a Circle of Distinction Award!

Introducing our next nominee for the Circle of Distinction Awards: Susan Smith 👏

✨ Susan Smith (she/her) has a strong passion for community organizing, starting in the 90’s with her involvement in the punk and metal scene. She strives to create space and belonging with folks who are seeking solace.

Susan grew up running around the streets of St. John’s and spent her 20s in Toronto and Portland. In 2012 she returned home to St. John’s to share her many skills and experiences in harm reduction, restorative justice, and social accountability. Susan advocates alongside people who use drugs and s*x workers for decriminalization and prison abolition. Susan manages the Safe Works Access Program (SWAP) at the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador

In her spare time Susan plays with her two puppies and tends to her herb garden.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day

This years IOAD theme is 25 Years On, Still Needed. This theme recognizes the strides we’ve made to reduce overdose deaths, but also recognizes that overdose continues to take too many lives.

Today we brought our community together for food, quality time, crafting, and overdose response education. We honoured our lost friends by keeping a seat open and remembering them.

To anyone grieving the loss of a loved one to overdose, we share in your grief.

We’re pushing forward to help end overdose. Look out for your friends and family. Carry naloxone (and know how to use it). Utilize supervision sites or services whenever possible. Test your drugs before using them. Contact us if you need safe supplies, testing strips, naloxone, or more information.

We’d also like to thank the NL government for once again showing their recognition of the effect overdose incidents and deaths have on the community and helping us spread awareness.

Overdose can impact anyone. Everyone can help to end overdose. All overdose is preventable.
