The AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador (ACNL) and Turnings invite you to apply for FREE Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) facilitated by Gerry Marshall! See below for more details.

Are you a parent/caregiver who has experience with mental health, addiction or the criminal justice system? This course is for you!

Being a parent/caregiver is tough. It doesn't matter if you're caring for a toddler or trying to communicate with teenagers, there are lots of opportunities for even the most easygoing parents to lose their patience. Learning how to effectively handle the conflicts that arise on a daily basis is crucial - both for parents and children. We are here to help. Our 8-session program offers you the skills that will help improve the quality of your relationships and make the caregiving/parenting experience less frustrating and more rewarding.

This program will take place Sunday evenings from 6 - 9 pm starting on Sunday, April 12 and finishing on Sunday, May 31. Participants will receive 8 3-hour training sessions on parenting effectiveness topics and a certificate of completion upon finishing the course.

Topics covered include:
- An overview of the Parenting Effectiveness Training (PET) Program
- Learning the Helping Skills: What Works and Why
- Active Listening
- Preventing Problems and Conflicts
- Confronting Unacceptable Behaviours
- Resolving Conflicts
- Resolving Values Collisions

Limited seating is available and participants will have to arrange their own transportation and child care. Please let us know if you’d like to be added to a wait list, and/or be notified of future programming!

09/01/2025

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a day where people around the world come together to mourn those who we have lost to overdose and the toxic drug supply and to take action to prevent further lives lost. Overdose and the toxic drug supply has stolen the lives of thousands of people in Canada and has left friends, families, and communities to contend with waves of grief. These deaths and this grief were preventable. For those who are grieving the loss of a loved one due to overdose and the toxic drug supply: we see you and we mourn with you.

For IOAD 2025, we are all invited to move beyond awareness into action. Only a community-wide effort can bring us closer to ending overdose. Below, we have listed a few actions you can take to make your community safer today.

1. Pick up a naloxone kit and learn how to use it. SWAP and other distribution sites have naloxone kits available for free. Training is available on the spot when picking up a kit at SWAP. Keep your kit somewhere accessible, like your purse or your car glove box. Other sites across the province can be found by visiting https://www.gov.nl.ca/hcs/naloxonekits/.

2. Read the open letter shared by the Harm Reduction Nurses Association (HRNA) requesting Prime Minister Mark Carney meet with them to discuss proposed policies that threaten the lives of people who use drugs: https://bit.ly/4mChlwX

3. Donate to or volunteer with a local organization that supports people who use drugs in your community.
