Building Skills Beyond the Arts | Cultivating Legacy
An important part of our September 6 Cultivating Legacy Showcase was a special Grant Writing Session led by Yasmina Proveyer, Cultural Funding Officer with the City of Ottawa.

Participants gained practical insights into grant writing, City cultural funding opportunities, and preparing stronger funding applications to support their artistic and creative journeys.

Cultivating Legacy is not only about showcasing talent, it is also about equipping emerging Black artists with the knowledge and tools to build sustainable creative careers.

Our sincere appreciation to Yasmina Proveyer and the City of Ottawa for this valuable session and for supporting the Cultivating Legacy Program.

Celebrating Talent at Cultivating Legacy!
The Cultivating Legacy Showcase came alive with a special music performance by MKay, one of our talented program participants.
The performance was another beautiful expression of what Cultivating Legacy represents, providing emerging Black artists with opportunities to develop their talents, build confidence, connect with community and showcase their creativity.
We celebrate .music and all our participants as they continue their creative journeys beyond the program.

Creativity on Display | Cultivating Legacy
A glimpse into our September 6 Cultivating Legacy Showcase, where our participants had the opportunity to present their creative works and celebrate months of learning, mentorship and artistic development.
Featuring the visual art of , the photography of Patrick Baker, and textile arts from our emerging Black artists, this showcase reflects what Cultivating Legacy is all about, creating opportunities for emerging Black artists to develop their craft, share their stories and gain visibility.

At our Cultivating Legacy Showcase, we proudly celebrated the creative journeys of two of our talented participants, Aschbel Joseph, whose visual artworks were exhibited, and Patrick Baker, whose photography captured powerful stories through the lens.
From April to September 2026, our participants explored, learned, connected and developed their creative practices through workshops and mentorship. The September 6 showcase was an opportunity to bring that journey to life and share their work with our community.
We are proud to provide a platform where emerging Black artists can create, grow and be seen.

A Tourist in My Own Country

This short clip offers a glimpse into the remarkable artwork of Aschbel Joseph , a gifted artist whose creative journey has been shaped by migration, identity, memory and belonging.

Aschbel left Haiti at just 11 years old following a earthquake hurricane and began a new life in Ottawa. A trained architect with an exceptional passion for the arts, she has used creativity to navigate her journey and tell powerful stories through her work.

As one of the first participants in AfroCulture Initiative’s Cultivating Legacy Program (CLP), proudly sponsored by the City of Ottawa , Aschbel’s contributions and collaboration with us have been truly outstanding.

Aschbel, we are incredibly proud to have you as our mentee. Your talent, courage and creativity inspire us, and we are certainly going to miss you! Congratulations, Chicago is waiting! ❤️

Cultivating Legacy: A Journey of Creativity, Growth & Impact

As we prepare for the Grand Finale of the Cultivating Legacy Program (CLP) on September 6, 2026, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the journey so far, since April 26, 2026, the learning, mentorship, connections, creativity, and opportunities that have brought us to this point.

In this short testimonial video, Dr. Adeola Shobo, Founder and Executive Director of AfroCulture Initiative, shares the vision behind Cultivating Legacy, alongside reflections from Aschbel Joseph Aschbel Joseph and Patrick Baker on the program and its impact.

From developing practical skills to strengthening creative confidence and building meaningful connections, CLP has been about creating opportunities for Black youth and emerging Black artists to learn, grow, collaborate, and build sustainable pathways in the arts.

And the journey isn’t over yet!

On September 6, we will bring everyone together for our Grand Finale and Participant Showcase, celebrating the creativity, achievements, and growth of our participants. Program officers from the City of Ottawa will also be present to do a recap of available grant opportunities.
