How did a small Rotary Village come to be in a small Canadian town? And what does it have to do with Kharkiv? The answer to these questions is in the story of the Rotarians Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends
On September 13, the fourth Ukrainian Fest Lanark County took place in Carleton Place, Canada. The organization of the event was initially taken on by our fellow Rotarian Olga Ialovenko, who now lives in Canada. Rotary has always been a part of this history - through people, friendships, help, and joint projects.
❗️❗️But this year it all went to a whole new level: inside the Ukrainian festival, a whole Rotary Village appeared - a community of Rotarians.
It was taken on by Orest Peter Khaburskyi Orest Peter Chab, President Rotary Intercountry Committee Canada Ukraine. The festival was attended by the current Governor Rotary District 7040 Barbara Fisk .fisk, who performed on the main stage. There were two Past District Governors - Graeme Fraser, Governor 2025-2026, and Hadi Mortada, Governor 2020-2021, presidents and past presidents of the clubs, Rotarians from different cities. And when you look at all this from Kharkiv, it is especially interesting to see how all these people came together in one park in a small Canadian town.
For example, Gerhard Peters .peters.33. Once Olya met him at the Rotary International Convention in Houston. It was Gerhard who introduced her to District 7040 in 2022, and then he started raising funds in Canada for special blankets for Kharkiv. The project worked for several years: the money was raised in Canada, the blankets were made for Kharkiv. This time Olya specifically asked Arnprior Rotary Club one of the club sponsors of our Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends to send one finished blanket back to Canada. And the people who once raised money for them were finally able to see and hold the real result of their help in their hands.
There was also Arnprior Rotary Club one of the club sponsors of our Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends. And Rotary Club of Chesterville & District provided the festival with a grill, paid for its delivery and gas. And behind this is a story that very clearly explains Rotary. In May 2026, Olya met their Past President Birket Foster at one of the events. She just saw a Paul Harris pin on his clothing. A short conversation, a meeting - and a few months later his club was already helping the Ukrainian festival.
❤️ Another thread connected to Rotary Club Kyiv-Centre. Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends0 who now lives in Toronto, helped find a special gift for the mayor of the neighboring town Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends1 - a person with Ukrainian roots, who after 12 years of service to the community is leaving her position as mayor. So a bolt of fabric with a Petrovskyy pattern came all the way from Ukraine to Canada. And at the festival itself was Oksana Pikuush, the keeper of the Petrovskyy pattern: she conducted master classes, sang and added to the festival's live Ukrainian folk art. This Tapestry is called “Rushnyk of Unity and Victory”
❗️❗️Even our club flag had its own geography on this day. Friends from Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends passed the flag that was with us during the transfer of the District 2232. It crossed the ocean and on September 13, the Rotarians from District 7040 met in Canada, right next to the Rotarians from District 7040.
One could say that these are just a lot of good coincidences. But for Rotary, such "coincidences" happen for some reason. People meet at the Convention, notice each other's Rotary pin, meet in different countries, support each other's projects, introduce friends to friends. Months and years pass and suddenly these acquaintances turn into a common cause.
And the most interesting thing happened after the festival.
People from Olya's team started asking one another:
"How to become a Rotarian?"
And today they are already seriously talking about the possibility of creating a new Rotary Club here.
For us, this is probably one of the most valuable results of Rotary Village. During the day, people saw Rotary close to themselves: the governors and presidents of the clubs, international connections, help to Kharkiv, cooperation with the Ukrainian community, specific actions and people who have supported each other for years across borders.
And in the evening, some of them wanted to become part of this community.
This is how the principle of Kharkiv Friends works:
WE START WITH A COINCIDENCE - THEN WE SERVE ❤️
Sometimes one friendship leads to a project. And sometimes many years of friendship lead to the fact that thousands of kilometers away from Kharkiv, a whole village of Rotary Village appears one day. And perhaps a new Rotary Club is born.
Let's tell you another story about this festival. Because it was here that the Great Ruffle of Unity - the Ruffle of Victory Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends2 was first unfolded on the North American continent. And the first ruffle that continued its Canadian history was the Ruffle of Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends.

🇺🇦 🇨🇦 Як у маленькому канадському місті з’явилося ціле ротарійське містечко Rotary Village? І до чого тут Харків? Відповідь на ці запитання у розповіді ротарійців Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends .
13 вересня у канадському Carleton Place відбувся четвертий Ukrainian Fest Lanark County . Його від самого початку організовує наша одноклубниця Olga Ialovenko , яка сьогодні живе в Канаді. Rotary завжди був частиною цієї історії - через людей, знайомства, допомогу, спільні проєкти.
❗️❗️Але цього року все вийшло на зовсім інший рівень: усередині українського фестивалю з’явилося ціле ротарійське містечко - Rotary Village.
Його створення взяв на себе Орест Петер Хабурський Orest Peter Chab , President Rotary Intercountry Committee Canada Ukraine. На фестиваль приїхала чинна Governor Rotary District 7040 Barbara Fisk .fisk , яка виступила на головній сцені. Були два Past District Governors - Graeme Fraser, Governor 2025-2026, та Hadi Mortada, Governor 2020-2021, президенти й Past Presidents клубів, ротарійці з різних міст. І коли дивишся на все це з Харкова, особливо цікаво простежити, як узагалі всі ці люди опинилися разом в одному парку маленького канадського міста.
Наприклад, приїхав Gerhard Peters .peters.33. Колись Оля познайомилася з ним на Rotary International Convention у Houston. Саме Gerhard у 2022 році представив її District 7040, а згодом почав збирати в Канаді кошти на спеціальні водонепроникні ковдри для Харкова. Проєкт працював кілька років: гроші збирали в Канаді, ковдри виготовляли для Харкова. Цього разу Оля спеціально попросила надіслати одну готову ковдру назад до Канади. І люди, які колись збирали на них гроші, нарешті змогли побачити й потримати руками реальний результат своєї допомоги.
На фестивалі був і Arnprior Rotary Club - один із клубів-спонсорів нашого Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends. А Rotary Club of Chesterville & District надав фестивалю свій гриль, оплатив його доставку та газ. І за цим теж стоїть історія, яка дуже точно пояснює Rotary. У травні 2026 року Оля випадково зустріла їхнього Past President Birket Foster на одному з заходів. Просто побачила на його одязі Paul Harris pin. Значок, коротка розмова, знайомство - і через кілька місяців його клуб уже допомагає українському фестивалю.
❤️ Ще одна нитка потягнулася до Rotary Club Kyiv-Centre. Oleksii Tsebro , який зараз живе в Toronto, допоміг знайти особливий подарунок для мера сусіднього містечка Shawn Pankow, Mayor of Smiths Falls - людини з українським корінням, яка після 12 років служіння громаді завершує роботу на посаді мера. Так з України до Канади приїхала булава з петриківським розписом. А на самому фестивалі була Оксана Пікуш, берегиня петриківського розпису: проводила майстер-клас, співала й додавала фестивалю живої української автентики.
❗️❗️Навіть наш клубний прапор цього дня мав власну географію. Друзі з Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends передали Олі прапор, який був із нами під час передачі каденції District 2232. Він перетнув океан і 13 вересня вже майорів у Канаді поруч із ротарійцями District 7040.
Можна було б сказати, що це просто багато хороших збігів. Але в Rotary такі «збіги» чомусь трапляються постійно. Люди знайомляться на Convention, помічають один у одного Rotary pin, зустрічаються в різних країнах, підтримують проєкти одне одного, знайомлять друзів із друзями. Минають місяці й роки і раптом ці окремі знайомства складаються у спільну справу.
А найцікавіше сталося після фестивалю.
Люди з команди Олі один за одним почали запитувати:
«А як стати ротарійцем?»
І сьогодні вони вже серйозно говорять про можливість створення тут нового Rotary Club.
Для нас це, мабуть, один із найцінніших результатів Rotary Village. Протягом дня люди бачили Rotary поруч із собою: губернатора й президентів клубів, міжнародні зв’язки, допомогу Харкову, співпрацю з українською громадою, конкретні справи й людей, які роками підтримують одне одного через кордони.
А ввечері частина з них захотіла стати частиною цієї спільноти.
Ось так для нас працює принцип Kharkiv Friends:
СПОЧАТКУ ДРУЖИМО - ПОТІМ СЛУЖИМО ❤️
Іноді одна дружба приводить до одного проєкту. А іноді багато років дружби приводять до того, що за тисячі кілометрів від Харкова одного дня з’являється ціле містечко Rotary Village. І, можливо, народжується новий Rotary Club.
Далі розповімо ще одну історію цього фестивалю. Бо саме тут уперше на Північноамериканському континенті розгорнули великий Рушник Єдності - Рушник Перемоги Unity Rushnyk - Victory Rushnyk for Peace/Рушник Єдності - Рушник Перемоги . І перший рушник, який продовжив його канадську історію, був рушником Rotary Club Kharkiv Friends.

Олю, як чартерному президенту Kharkiv Friends, мені дуже складно читати цей пост просто як історію про ще один успішний захід нашої одноклубниці.
Бо я знаю, скільки ТЕБЕ в усьому цьому.
Скільки енергії, часу, праці, нервів, розмов, листування, домовленостей і постійного фокусу уваги ти вклала в те, щоб цей фестиваль відбувся саме таким. За красивою картинкою Rotary Village стоять місяці роботи однієї дуже впертої українки, яка вміє знайомитися, дружити, об’єднувати людей і доводити великі історії до результату. ❤️
І для мене тут є ще один дуже особистий момент. Коли ми створювали Kharkiv Friends, нам хотілося побудувати клуб, у якому люди не просто приходять на засідання чи беруть участь у готових проєктах. Хотілося, щоб кожен із нас міг сам ставати точкою, навколо якої виникають нові зв’язки, нові проєкти, нові спільноти та новий вплив Rotary.
І сьогодні я дивлюся на маленьке канадське місто, де завдяки тобі з’явився Rotary Village, де поруч стоять губернатори, президенти клубів, ротарійці різних поколінь і українська громада, де говорять про Харків, а після фестивалю люди запитують: «Як стати ротарійцем?» — і думаю: ОЦЕ ВОНО.
Оце і є той вплив, про який ми так багато говоримо.
Олю, я дуже тобою пишаюся — тим, скільки сили, енергії та серця ти вкладаєш у те, що робиш.
Дякую тобі за це. І окремо — за те, що за тисячі кілометрів від Харкова наш клубний прапор не просто майорить. Навколо нього вже збираються люди. ❤️🇺🇦🇨🇦
А наше «СПОЧАТКУ ДРУЖИМО — ПОТІМ СЛУЖИМО», схоже, вже остаточно втратило географічні обмеження. 😄
