Ottawa South Eco-Action Network - OSEAN We are a group of neighbours in Ottawa South who volunteer as environmental advocates with a primary focus events/actions that impact our communities

Ottawa South Eco-Action Network is a volunteer group of people living in Ottawa South who work to raise awareness about local environmental issues. We work with Ecology Ottawa to inform the public about local concerns and opportunities. We also work with Ottawa City Councillors of River, Alta Vista and Gloucester South wards to create a better ecological future in our part of the Capital. New volunteers are always welcome.

Very excited to see the city moving forward on community-led invasive plant removal.

Did you know a project coordinator has been hired who is responsible for developing and managing a partnership pilot to expand community collaboration?

From now until Monday, July 20, you can share your input via an Engage Ottawa survey on the tools, knowledge and supports you or your community group would need to help protect green spaces in your community: https://engage.ottawa.ca/healthy-greenspaces-community-action-on-invasive-plants

Our thoughts? The city doesn’t need to be recreating the wheel here. Rely on the success of existing programs like Toronto Nature Stewards, focus on “Train the Trainer” programs to build up the number of local experts (many already exist!), utilize the tools and guides and workshops that are already provided by expert organizations like oninvasives.

The program that is needed is one that allows groups to quickly get up to speed and then get started in the field. For Question 7– the information/workshops/demonstrations does not need to be provided by the city. The city should be leaning into the experts that already exist in Ottawa

Saturday is going to be amazing! We hope you will come and join in the fun!

Thank you to journalist Gabrielle Huston for publishing this cbcnews article on the new invasive species insurance for groups who want to work on city land. OSEAN is thankful for the leadership of councillor Marty Carr- Alta Vista Ward/Quartier Alta Vista for listening to the challenges of community groups across Ottawa and bringing this issue to city staff!

OSEAN is exciting to ideally work directly with the city on invasive species removal this year as a result of this new insurance program!
