Ottawa South Eco-Action Network - OSEAN We are a group of neighbours in Ottawa South who volunteer as environmental advocates with a primary focus events/actions that impact our communities

Ottawa South Eco-Action Network is a volunteer group of people living in Ottawa South who work to raise awareness about local environmental issues. We work with Ecology Ottawa to inform the public about local concerns and opportunities. We also work with Ottawa City Councillors of River, Alta Vista and Gloucester South wards to create a better ecological future in our part of the Capital. New volunteers are always welcome.

🌍 At IMMdesignlab we work for Climate Adaptation: Building Resilient Cities 🏙️

With climate change posing increasing risks to urban areas, it's crucial to prioritize adaptation efforts. Hundreds of millions of urban dwellers are vulnerable to its direct and indirect impacts.

Climate adaptation involves anticipating these effects and taking proactive measures to prevent or minimize damage, while also seizing opportunities that may arise. Research shows that well-planned adaptation saves lives and resources in the long run.
Adaptation strategies are essential at all levels of urban administration: local, regional, national, and EU. Let's work together to foster resilience, promote sustainable development, and achieve SDG11!

🌳🏞️ Ottawa is unique in having significant urban greenspace, which is managed by the National Capital Commission. But that greenspace is under growing pressure as our city densifies and looks for room to build.

In this month's Climate CAFES on CKCU 93.1 FM, Angela Keller-Herzog chats with Mireille Trent, an environmental economist, member of the Ottawa South Eco Action Network, and active with the Hunt Club Community Association, about the NCC’s recent appeal of the new Zoning By-law.

📻🎼 Tune in to 93.1 FM at 8am on Monday, July 13 for another exciting episode of Climate Cafes with Angela on CKCU’s Monday Special Blend!
⏰Every second Monday of the month at 8AM only on CKCU 93.1 FM.

Now is the time to check your yard for dog-strangling vine and ideally dig it up from it’s roots. But if you are feeling daunted or overwhelmed by the number of plants - cutting off the seed pods to prevent them from releasing seeds is the second best option. Check out this post for proper disposal AND for more info visit our resource page for some invasive species Identification and removal fact sheets: https://www.osean.org/invasive-species-removal

Huge thank you to the many groups and tireless volunteers who are working to remove invasive plants in our community and protect biodiversity

With the recent heat wave, the weather has been favourable for the growth of many plant species, including the invasive Dog Strangling Vine (DSV). DSV has the ability to spread rapidly, crowding out native plants. It is particularly harmful to Monarch butterflies, which often mistake DSV for milkweed and lay their eggs on it. Unfortunately, Monarch caterpillars cannot survive on DSV.

Over the next couple of weeks, if you have a few spare moments, please consider taking a walk through any nearby park, trail, or other green space and bring a bag to collect DSV seed pods. Seed pods are currently turning yellow, making them easier to spot amongst green foliage.

Once the seed pods are collected, please place the sealed bag in full sun for two to three weeks before discarding them with regular household waste. Please do not place these seed pods in the compost as this may allow the seeds to spread.

Thank you for your help in protecting native plants, ecosystems, and wildlife.
