The Nanaimo Child Development Centre had fun participating in Vancouver Island's WheelKids Have A Go Day this past Friday evening at Rotary Bowl Stadium. Youths had a chance to try sport wheelchairs and racing chairs, and try para throwing sports like shotput and javelin.

This National Physiotherapy Month, Kristin, a member of the NCDC's Physiotherapy team, is joined by Rody Max, a bouncy toy that can help children with balance, strength and other movement skills.
The Nanaimo Child Development Centre's Physiotherapists provide services for children from birth to age 19. They provide service in the home, at the centre, in school or elsewhere in the community (e.g. daycares, playgrounds or recreational programs), and provide home programs and parent coaching for families to have the tools and strategies to help them reach their child and family goals.

Fred Penner says performing at the Silly Boat Regatta, a fundraiser for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, fits well with his values.
"Never underestimate your ability to make a difference in the life of a child. That's been almost a mantra for me for a long time," he said.

A legendary Canadian children's musician will be at the Silly Boat Regatta to sing songs before all the splashing starts. Fred Penner will be the headline entertainer at the 40th Nanaimo Silly Boat Regatta on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Maffeo Sutton Park.

The Nanaimo Child Development Centre's Drop-In Community Playgroup is more than playtime – there's so much going on at once. For the NCDC, it enables our Family Resource Navigator staff members to get eyes on kids, meet families, and keep in contact with the centre's clients. For parents and guardians, it's an opportunity to connect with the centre as well as other families. For the kids, it's a place to play in different ways. Almost all activities are child-led, with the giant sandbox, the toy cars and the train table especially popular. Playgroup is held across the NCDC's indoor space, covered outdoor space, and fenced grounds, and we have a vision for playground improvements that will make more of the space more accessible.
Playgroup is inclusive and it's the NCDC at our most welcoming. Thank you to donors for helping us continue to extend that welcome.
