Ground Search and Rescue organization in Miramichi, New Brunswick Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue (MGSAR) is 1 of 10 search teams in New Brunswick, Canada.

We have not only the largest jurisdiction (Northumberland County) in the province but also the least populated and extremely diverse in terrain. We are continuously recruiting and always training in everything from; orienteering, survival, tracking, first aid and CPR to human behaviour. We are the silent heroes. We are the unpaid professionals.

Every report of a missing person is taken seriously by the New Brunswick RCMP and is thoroughly investigated. It does not matter if someone has been reported missing before, or what their personal circumstances are - our priority is always to ensure the health and safety of the person reported missing.

We only issue news releases about missing persons if there is an urgent need to locate them to ensure their safety, or if all other investigative methods have been exhausted.

There are many reasons why someone may be reported missing. The RCMP's priority is to ensure the individual's safety – we do not share information about personal circumstances.

If you ever have to report someone missing, do not wait 24 hours. Contact police or 9-1-1 immediately if you have concerns about their personal safety.
Police will ask for:
• Full name of missing person
• Physical description – height, weight, hair colour, eye colour, etc.
• Where they were last seen
• What they were last seen wearing
• Details of the vehicle they were driving (if relevant)
• A recent photograph

Our priority is to ensure a person's safety if they are reported missing. Police must have direct contact with the individual reported missing to conclude an investigation.

GM at MGSAR

MGSAR’s Executive Committee recently held its triannual General Meeting (GM), providing members with an engaging opportunity to learn more about the organization’s accomplishments and future plans.

Attendees heard updates on recent activities, training initiatives, and community outreach efforts, while also gaining insight into upcoming events and projects. The meeting encouraged discussion and member engagement, helping to strengthen connections within the organization and foster enthusiasm for the year ahead.

The GM served as an important forum for sharing information, celebrating achievements, and outlining priorities that will continue to support MGSAR’s mission and commitment to serving the community.

MGSAR AND THE ALZHEIMER SOCIETY OF NEW BRUNSWICK

Today, Richard of the Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue (MGSAR) team met with the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick at the Memory Café to deliver a presentation on Project Lifesaver and the many benefits it provides to individuals living with cognitive conditions and their families.

The session highlighted how Project Lifesaver uses specialized radio-transmitting bracelets to help locate vulnerable individuals who may wander and become lost. Participants learned about the program’s proven effectiveness, rapid response capabilities, and the peace of mind it offers caregivers. The presentation also provided an opportunity for discussion, questions, and community awareness about this important safety initiative.

WHAT IS A MGSAR MOCK SEARCH

A mock search is a fully planned training exercise that simulates a real missing‑person incident. It allows MGSAR members to practice every stage of a deployment: receiving the callout, organizing teams, assigning search sectors, navigating terrain, communicating with command, and applying proper search techniques. Because the scenario is controlled, instructors can introduce challenges—limited visibility, complex terrain, or evolving information—that mirror what happens during actual operations.

Mock searches are essential to MGSAR’s readiness. They give members hands‑on experience, reinforce yearly training requirements, and ensure that new and experienced volunteers work together using consistent methods. These exercises also help the team evaluate equipment, refine procedures, and identify areas that need improvement before a real emergency occurs. Most importantly, mock searches build confidence and cohesion, ensuring that when someone in the community goes missing, MGSAR responds with skill, coordination, and professionalism.

Saturday October 17 MGSAR Mock Search at French Fort Cove was an outstanding demonstration of cohesive teamwork and the mastering of a complex extrication.

It was also a premiere of our new minted Safety Officers involvement.

RECRUITING IS ON OUR MIND!

Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue has had an exceptionally busy year, and we’re looking for new volunteers to join our team. No prior search and rescue experience is needed—we’ll provide all the training you require to become a skilled and confident responder.

What we ask for is commitment: some Wednesday evening training, some Saturday practice sessions, 50 hours per year overall attendance and the readiness to answer the call when emergencies arise—whether day or night, in any kind of weather.

COMMAND POST, WE HAVE A SIERRA LIMA INDIA IN PROGRESS.

Extrication is a comprehensive discipline focused on safely retrieving an injured or immobilized person from challenging terrain. In a wooded environment, this process demands coordinated teamwork, precise communication, and a solid understanding of specialized equipment.

Responders must assess hazards, stabilize the patient, and determine the safest route for removal, often navigating dense forest, uneven ground, or limited visibility. The course teaches how to package a casualty, manage environmental risks, and execute a controlled evacuation while maintaining patient care throughout the operation.

It reinforces the importance of situational awareness, methodical planning, and adaptability, ensuring that rescuers can move efficiently from initial contact to final transport.

A Sierra India scenario tests every aspect of these skills, making extrication training essential for any ground search and rescue team operating in wilderness settings.
