At our last biweekly meeting of the summer on August 26 at Mikes Bar and Grill, our club was pleased to present a cheque for $5,000 to Hospice Miramichi Inc.! These funds will help offset the cost of capital improvements at Vondy House, the group’s six-bed residential hospice facility located in a former special care home on Harper Road.
Hospice Miramichi, a registered not-for-profit, offers “professional, compassionate, and family-centred care at the end of life when home care is no longer the best option and hospital care is not required,” according to the Vondy House website. The group provides four palliative and two respite care beds, the first in the province to do so. All services are provided at no charge to patients and their families, except for medical co-pays.
Hospice Miramichi was established in 2011 to support patients during the end stage of life, and families during the grieving process. It employs licensed nursing staff who specialize in palliative care, working with the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program to offer end-of-life care. Its services are available to any resident of Miramichi and the surrounding areas. The group receives an annual grant from the provincial government to support its operations, but depends on the community’s generosity to fundraise for the balance of its operating costs. Some of this fundraising takes place through Vondy's Nearly New Boutique on Newcastle Boulevard and The Hospice Shoppe on University Avenue.
Fighting disease is one of Rotary International’s seven key pillars, and Hospice Miramichi provides a needed service in the region that helps alleviate the strain on the healthcare system by offering a peaceful, home-like environment for palliative patients.
