Miramichi Literacy Council Literacy Tutoring and Programs in Miramichi Area. We offer conversational skill upgrades to ESL learners through individual tutoring and group sessions.

Miramichi Literacy Council (MLC)

Was formed with 23 Charter members in September, 1978

We provide free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring to adults seeking to improve their literacy and numeracy skills in the Miramichi area. Our Cooking to Learn program helps motivate students to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills through small, in-person group workshops. We facilitate a number

of programs at the local Women's Correctional Center of NB including Mommy Reads to Me and a monthly book club. As of May 2021, we operate the StoryWalk at Middle Island, a family literacy initiative at the Middle Island Irish Historical Park in partnership with the Chatham Public Library. We host multiple community events during the year, including a Holiday Sock Drive, a Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser and a Middle School Poetry Contest. We have partnered with local libraries in celebration of International Literacy Day and Family Literacy Day Events

In 2006 we became a member of Miramichi Partners in Literacy, consisting of Miramichi Literacy Council Inc., New Brunswick Libraries, Horizon New Brunswick (hospital), Mango, Community Inclusion Network, and School District 16, to stage community events to raise Literacy awareness in both the English and French languages. We are so grateful for the continued support of Rotary Club of Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada

Today, our club presented a $6,800 cheque to the Miramichi Literacy Council for the funds from our 2025 District Grant in support of the literacy council’s Retelling Our Stories initiative that teaches writing lessons to inmates at the New Brunswick Women’s Correctional Centre!

The literacy council was founded in 1978 to help adults improve their literacy skills and to promote literacy awareness. Supporting education is among Rotary International’s seven key pillars, and helping with literacy initiatives is one of the ways our club advances that cause.

SAVE THE DATE!

The Rotary Club of Miramichi’s 12th annual Purse Auction will be held on November 7 at Tyra’s Infinity Centre. Doors open at 6 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Carry Kindness: A Touch of Literacy and Style.” Proceeds from the event will support literacy projects, one of Rotary’s key pillars, and other Rotary projects in the community.

In addition to our live purse auction, this event will also feature a silent auction. Our club has been contacting local businesses and organizations requesting sponsorship and the donation of items for door prizes and the silent auction. We are extremely grateful for everyone who has supported the event so far!

Tickets are available for $50 each. The tickets will be available on Thursday, sold at Three Dog Distilling, Denim Warehouse, Mrs. Coats & More and Scott's Pharmasave. They include admission to the event and your name being entered into a grand prize draw for a Coach purse, Coach charm, and cash! (That’s a total value of $1,000 for that prize
