We’re so proud of our YOLO youth and deeply grateful for our partnership! Thank you to all the dedicated students who worked hard at the Siloam garden to support local food security.
LUSO has been in partnership with Urban Roots London for three seasons. Together, we provide opportunities for high school students to fulfill their volunteer hours and connect with nature while enhancing food security in our community.
Through the Youth Organizing Leadership Opportunities (YOLO) program, students can connect with Urban Roots and participate in volunteer sessions at the Siloam garden site. Every Friday, students show up to the garden to help w**d and water the beds. Students come together from different schools, backgrounds and experience levels. What they all have in common is curiosity, a passion for working in nature and a desire to learn more about growing food. They reflect that it is hard work, and they expected more planting, but they have learned that the core of agriculture is maintenance. The tedious but necessary tasks that allow the plants to grow and thrive. They keep showing up because they like the work we do, and they appreciate the opportunity to get experience working in agriculture.
Since 2024, students have showed up to help maintain the Siloam bed for a cumulative 40 hours. With the help of these students, Urban Roots has increased the productivity of the Siloam garden site and distributed more produce to more people every year. Big thank you to LUSO and the dedicated volunteers who have helped us distribute more affordable, local and organically grown produce to our community.
